Happy Monday, everyone! My apologies for getting back to you late this week--as I was moving out of my apartment yesterday, which took a lot more time than I had anticipated! So I will instead be delivering your weekly updates to you on this fine Monday.
My perk of being a zero-waster for this week actually occurred during my moving process!
- As I was moving, I tried my absolute best to produce as little waste as possible. For the most part all of my belongings were kept for my next apartment, but I found the biggest plastic hoard in our household was in the kitchen. Unfortunately, while I choose to be plastic-free when it comes to my food/groceries, my roommate did not lead this lifestyle. As I was cleaning out some of the food she left behind, I did not have the heart to throw it away. So instead, I brought the unopened goodies to a local soup kitchen & distributed some to homeless individuals on the main street of my campus. This way, the food would not go to waste and the people of the community were being helped in some way! If you needed one, this is your sign to clean out your pantry and re-distribute items that you don't intend on eating (if they're unopened) to a local homeless shelter, etc. As an aside, one thing I hadn't considered is that if you are planning to donate dried goods like rice or pasta that need to be cooked, you are better donating this to a soup kitchen rather than directly to individuals on the street who likely don't have access to kitchen appliances. Hoping to spread the kindness this week!
Here are the rest of my weekly updates:
- TODAY AT 1:30PM I have an IG Live with Sustainability Champions! This is going to be the largest press appearance I have ever done by far--as the account has over 100k followers! The live will last for about 45 minutes and we will be talking a lot about my book and other community-oriented projects that I have been involved in! You can join by going over to the @sustainabilitychampions Instagram Story or my account @alexa.c.smitty to watch it live! I can also send out the link in next week's newsletter!
- Last week I had another meeting with a podcast called Mission Shunya, and their producer Girish wants to have me on next month to talk about the circular economy, my book, and myself. His podcast has tended to lean more academically--so this will be an interesting new opportunity for me! Stay tuned!
- I created a TikTok discussing the "Eye of Fire" situation in the Gulf of Mexico. I've gotten some really positive feedback so far, so if you're interested go check it out!
That's all for this week!
Best wishes, Alexa Smith
