Banbury Star Cyclists' Club

February 2019 newsletter

Although we're now well into the middle of winter, our club rides continue to attract a good turn out. This is particularly true of the Saturday Gentle Cafe Ride. It's a great way for new members to start riding with the club with no pressure and a relaxing halfway stop as the photo illustrates. Our recent rides survey has had a great response, so thank you all.

This newsletter starts to preview some of the activities planned for this year, which will also be discussed at our forthcoming Quarterly Meeting next Tuesday 5th.

Please send any comments, ideas or proposals regarding the contents of the newsletter to the Press Officer. Copies of all previous newsletters can be found on the club website - About BSCC

Presidential ponderings

Thank you to everyone who has responded to the recent surveys that we created as your feedback is invaluable in determining what is working well within the club and where you'd like to see improvements made to enable us to keep on delivering on what you, the members, want. The information will be input into the same supercomputer that Keri Williams uses to calculate the time trial handicaps and a summary published in a future newsletter.

It's not long until entries close for our first club race of the year and I'm looking forward to seeing lots of you representing the club by racing the 23 miles of the Stratford Road. More details are below on how to enter if you've not yet done so. Remember, cash prizes, silverware and amazing cake will be given out!

We had a great turnout for the AGM held last Autumn, next week sees the first of the 2019 Quarterly Meetings and I hope to see a similar level of attendance where a broad range of topics will be aired and give attendees the opportunity to raise questions of the committee.

Quarterly Meeting - Tuesday 5th February

The Winter Quarterly Meeting will be held next week on Tuesday 5th February at Wroxton Sports Club. This is your chance to take an active part in club life, hear the plans for 2019 and suggest new ideas or initiatives.

Please arrive by 7.15pm for a prompt 7.30pm start.

Hardriders TT - Sunday 3rd March

Have you entered yet?    Can you volunteer on the day?

The club's opening time trial, the Hardriders Open TT, takes place on Sunday 3rd March. Entries are via the CTT website link below and the closing date is 19th February. Please note as this is an Open event, no on-the-day entries are allowed.

Like all club Open events we'll need a number of volunteers, mainly marshals, to ensure the safe running of the event. New TT Secretary, Oli Wright, will be arranging this via Facebook and accordingly there will be no Sunday club rides on this day.

2019 Time Trial season and calendar

The club's website has been updated with details of all the club time trials entered into the Race Calendar. In the coming weeks the marshal and pusher roster will be added for our Wednesday night club TTs. Please keep an eye on this and let the TT Secretary Oli Wright know as soon as possible if you can't make your nominated date.

Hardriders TT is our first event and then the club's weekly Wednesday night season starts at the end of March with our 5 mile "Come and try it" event out at Gaydon on 27th. We then start the serious business on our favourite K4/20 course with the 2UpTT on 3rd April.

Oli is in the process of putting together a guide to TT Marshalling which will be published soon. He'd also welcome any ideas for improvements and other feedback during the season. He can be contacted via the link below.

Spring Reliability Ride, Sunday 10th March

Time flies and it won't be long before the return of Spring is with us. This means that our annual Spring Reliability Ride is only just five weeks away on Sunday 10th March.

More details next month, but the route can be found by clicking on the link below.

Reliability Ride information

Another diary date. Saturday 30th Nov.

That's the date for this seasons Annual Dinner and Awards evening.

Whilst last year's event was a great success, the Castle at Edgehill could only accommodate 40 people, a number we now realise could have been exceeded had we the space. Ila and Paul have already been on the case for an alternative venue and the committee have now agreed this will be Hook Norton Brewery. Not only will we have a much bigger dinning area, but the room has it's own bar and we can even arrange a tour of the brewery beforehand if there's enough interest.

First BSCC time trial result of the year?

As many of you will know, long time club member Geoff Hewett recently moved to Cardiff. One of Geoff's favourite quotes was - "We are racers". A few weeks back we received this message from him:

I thought you might like to hear that having renewed my subscription today, I have already opened my 2019 Time Trial account by representing the Stars in the Cardiff 10 Miles RCC event this afternoon.
Held on an undulating 9.9 mile course (RS/9) on the road between St. Brides Major and Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan, this event was graced by cool, but dry conditions accompanied by a niggling north-westerly which made the return leg somewhat challenging.
I finished in 30.25, for 22nd place behind the winning 21.48 set by Andy Davies of Cardiff Jif.
First BSCC racing  result of the year?????????

Can anyone challenge that?

7th Heaven Cafe opens on Sunday 3rd Feb

As mentioned in last month's newsletter Carmen Hancock and Jon Parker, both club members, will be launching their above new venture on Sunday 3rd February from 8.30am. Free coffee and a warm welcome will be offered to all Star members riding there on the day.

The cycling themed cafe has a cosy atmosphere with sofas, wood burning stove, a large table to seat club groups and even a piano. The venue also features a showroom where Jon's bespoke range of Mach7 bikes will be on display.

They have lots of further activities planned for the venue, so why not go along and see and hear what it's all about.

Rising Stars - youth section news

As mentioned before we've got a great and enthusiastic group of youngsters now regularly attending our Rising Stars/Go-Ride sessions. However, if we are to continue it's success, we desperately need at least two further coaches to assist Lee. Our limit, set by British Cycling, is 15 children per coach, so at the moment we can't grow, nor can we really split the children into groups by ability.

So, this is another appeal for volunteer coaches. We currently hold two sessions a month on a Saturday for just 90 minutes, between 9.30 and 11am, so it's not a huge amount of time. If we could end up with three, or better still four coaches, the commitment could be just once a month. British Cycling's requirement is for Level 1 Coaches and the club will fund the cost involved. It's good fun and very rewarding, as can be seen by the efforts of 5 year old Henry Boyles below.

If you're interested, then please contact Lee for further information.

Meanwhile, the next session is tomorrow 2nd February, with a further one planned for 16th. As usual, please keep your eye on Facebook for the latest Rising Stars news.and updates.
