Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Faith
Is
Assurance”
Aim:
Know the
meaning
of faith and its implication for our lives;
Feel
God’s
constant presence;
and Develop
a
practice of relying on God for positive change.
Background:
Hebrews 11:1-7;
Psalm 46:1-11
Bible
Lesson:
Hebrews
11:1-3,
6;
Psalm 46:1-3, 8-11
“Now
faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things
not seen.” Hebrews
11:1 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
theme of our new quarter is “A Living Faith.” Our
lesson comes from the New
Testament Book of Hebrews. It is one of the twenty one epistles or
letters of the New Testament. It’s authorship is uncertain. It’s
intended audience were
Jews who had converted
to Christianity. The writer
encouraged them
to hold fast to their faith
in Jesus Christ, even with the pressure
by some who wanted them to
mix Judaism with Christianity. The theme of the Book of Hebrews is
the Superiority and sufficiency of Jesus Christ as the revealer and
mediator of God’s grace. The author emphasizes the superiority of
Jesus Christ’s Priesthood and the New Covenant to the Levitical
priesthood and the Mosaic covenant. Our
study today, emphasizes the superiority of faith in God and the
assurance that God
rewards those who place
their faith in Him.
- Hebrews
11:1-3,
Faith
is Confidence and Certainty:
The
eleventh chapter of Hebrews is sometimes called the “Hall of
Faith” as it gives example after example of saints who
demonstrated their faith in many difficult circumstances. The
chapter begins with the
definition
of faith as “the substance of things hoped for the evidence of
things not seen.” In other words, confidence held in things that
are hoped but not realized. Yet, so
confident until it is as if what is hoped for has already
materialized.
Because of the faith of past saints, many great feats were
undertaken and achieved. This is the faith that saints exhibit in
realizing how God brought the universe into being with just His
Words starting with absolutely nothing.
- Hebrews
11:6,
Faith is
Necessary:
All
saints should
strive
to please God with how we live our lives. The writer declares that
it is impossible to please God without faith. All who accept God’s
invitation to salvation must believe that He exists and that He
rewards all who diligently and sincerely seek Him. Just as we need
air to exist, we as saints need faith in God for our spiritual
lives.
-
Psalm
46:1-3,
Faith
is Trust in God as Our Refuge:
The
writer declares that God is our shelter, our refuge as well as our
strength in times of difficulties and trouble, which
we all experience.
Because
God is our protector, we have no need to fear or
worry even
in natural disasters such
as
destructive earthquakes and landslides or even
when
raging flood waters destroy everything in its path sweeping
everything into the sea. Oh how comforting it is to know that our
God provides protection for His saints!
-
Psalm
46:8-11,
Faith
is Trust in God Whose
Presence is Constant:
The
writer invites the readers to come and observe the unimaginable
power of God. Watch the destruction that He can bring about if
it
be His Will. God can even halt wars and destroy the weapons of war,
if it
be His Will. Then the writer quotes God, who says be still and know
that He
is real and that He will be exalted not only by unbelievers, but by
all
the
inhabitants of the earth. Finally, the writer reminds the readers
that the Lord of host is in our midst and the
God
of Israel is our refuge and
shelter. Oh how confident
we
can be
in placing our trust in
our God who possesses all power, all knowledge, and who
exists
everywhere!
Take
Aways:
- Faith
in God, contrary
to faith in
humankind,
is never misplaced.
- Our
God is forever present and is
always
taking care of His saints.
- Saints
can depend on God on all occasions in
prosperous times and troubled times!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Go
ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to
observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am
with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.”
Matthew
28:19-20 KJV
“I
am the vine, ye [are] the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in
him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do
nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and
is withered; and men gather them, and cast [them] into the fire, and
they are burned.” John
15:5-6 KJV
“And
Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto
you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto
this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and
nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Mat thew
17:20
KJV
“I
will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My
help [cometh] from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”
Psalm
121:1-2 KJV
“In
my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard
my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, [even] into
his ears.”
Psalm
18:6 KJV
“I
called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, [and set me]
in a large place.” Psalm
118:5 KJV
“Be
of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope
in the LORD.” Psalm
31:24 KJV
“For
we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a
man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see
not, [then] do we with patience wait for [it].”
Romans
8:24-25 KJV
