5 quick things –

Hi, gorgeous!

On our EFF THIS! Meditation team call this week, we had a long discussion around the idea that we have to fully love ourselves before we can truly love other people.... which, nah.

All those kind of proscriptions and rules and "sayings" about love are kinda BS, eh? Like, nothing is really linear, there are a million kinds of love and a billion ways to love, and anyone creating barriers to love is not really helping to spread the love.

Whatever kind of love you feel, whoever you feel it for, whatever beautiful ways you express it: good on ya. Wishing you all the love this Valentine's Day. Self-love, romantic love, friendly love, love for Doritos. All the love! In whatever order you feel it.

Okay here are your 5 things for this week. âŹ

    PRACTICE TIP
    1. self-love starter: hand over heart practice 💓

Interested in feeling some self-love? Here is a great short practice to try:

Tip #008 from my book, Hand Over Heart

•In a quiet place (with eyes closed if it feels good), place both hands gently over your heart.
•Take ten or so slow, deep breaths at whatever pace feels best.
•Tune into the feeling around your heart (the energy, the life force, the electromagnetic field) — simply noticing what it feels like to tune into your heart space.
•When you are done, raise your eyes, lower your hands, and notice if any of that feeling or energy remains.

Ready for a deeper practice? Try this free guided 20-minute Self-Compassion Meditation that I made for you.

    2. self-compassion

Everyone who works at EFF THIS! Meditation gets to pick out one book a month to buy for themselves–and if they love it, they get to use company budget to buy it for the rest of the team as well. (We love books!)

Last month, Katrina (our blog editor, accessibility advocate, and my awesome sister) bought us all Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself by Kristen Neff.

One of the things this book does particularly well is to tease out the key differences between self-esteem and self-compassion. It's also a great way to move from "I should love myself more" to "here is how I love myself more."

    I Quit 💁🏻‍♀️
    IT'S OKAY TO WALK AWAY
    3. I Quit.

Sometimes the kindest thing we can do for ourselves is to.... stop doing something. To walk away. To quit. To give up the relentless pursuit, the hustle.

This series from the New York Times is full of quitting gems:

I Quit: 20 Stories of People Who Walked Away From Their Jobs, Their Religion, Their Relationships, and Even This Assignment

I especially enjoyed I Quit.... Giving a Damn, Skincare, and the Presidential Campaign.

Maybe you could quit something today, too?

    4. class replay, affordable meditation

Speaking of self-love, I am re-sharing this piece I wrote for Thrive Global: 3 Reasons That Self Love Is First Love.

Thank you to Lodro Rinzler who listed my book as an affordable way to learn meditation in Her Money Magazine this week!

If you missed our free live class this week, you can watch the replay here–and our super-early-bird preview rate on the full class series is still available for another day or so.

    NATURE IS AMAZING
    5. surf + sun

When it comes to big-wave surfing, there are tall waves, and then there are "heavy" waves. If you want to see what a "heavy" wave looks like, check out this winning ride from the recent World Surf League championships in Nazaré, Portugal.... and yes, that is a WOMAN riding that monster wave, thank you very much. 🤙

Speaking of the mesmerizing power of mama nature, have you seen these close up pictures of the surface of the sun? They are incredible. Keep in mind that each of those "moving dots" is roughly the size of Texas. Breathtaking! (The motion is heat moving from the inside of the sun to the surface.... and then, you know, to us–to power our entire planet.)

I'll be writing you next week from Brooklyn–it's finally time for me to soak up some winter vibes. My time spent in sunny Miami has been so good for my health, and for our little elderly rescue dog, Eddie, too! (He's 16 years old.) But I'm looking forward to reconnecting with friends in NYC, and I have some sweaters that have been calling my name. Hope your week is cozy!
