African
American athletes have not only excelled in their respected sports
but have proven themselves worthy to lead major sports programs. Here
are just a few who have distinguished themselves as team coaches.
In
1920,
Frederick
Douglass “Fritz”
Pollard
(1894-1986)
became
one of the first two African American players in the newly founded
American Professional Football Association, later renamed the
National Football League. In 1921, Pollard became the first African
American head coach in NFL history when the Akron
Pros
named him co-coach of the team.
In
1962, John
“Buck” O’Neil became
the first African American to coach in major league baseball when
he
joined
the Chicago
Cubs coaching
staff.
He stayed with the Cubs until 1988, and
signed
Hall of Fame players Ernie Banks and Lou Brock to their first
contracts.
In
1966, Bill
Russell
was named coach of the Boston Celtics basketball team. This
appointment made him the first African American to coach an NBA
professional basketball team.
William
J.
Robinson
(1911 – 2008) was an American college basketball coach and scout.
Robinson became the first African-American head coach in NCAA
Division I history when he accepted the position at Illinois State
University in 1970.
Frank
Robinson,
(1935—2019), was
American
professional baseball player who became the first Black
manager in Major League Baseball. He
was born in Beaumont, Texas. As a youth,
Robinson played sandlot and American Legion Junior League baseball in
Oakland, California, and at McClymonds High School, where he
also played football and basketball. The right-hander played
third base and pitched occasionally. After graduation he was signed
by the National League (NL) Cincinnati Reds and
played with their minor league teams (third base and outfield) until
he joined the parent club in 1956. Robinson began managing the
Cleveland
Indians
in 1975.
In
1979, Willie
E. Jeffries
became the first Black man hired as a head coach for an NCAA Division
I-A football program when he took the job at Wichita State University
(WSU).
Art
Lee Shell is an American former professional
football player and coach. He played offensive tackle in the
American Football League and later in the National Football League
for the Oakland / Los Angeles Raiders. He was the first Black head
coach in the NFL's modern era in 1989 and became a two-time head
coach for the Raiders. During that time, he was one of just 21 Black
coaches who had held a top job on a non-interim basis.
Kelsey
Koelzer (June 16, 1995) is an American ice hockey defender,
currently serving as head coach of the Arcadia University women's ice
hockey program. She is the first black female head coach in NCAA ice
hockey history, as well as the Advisor to the Commissioner on
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the NWHL
To
God Be the Glory for opportunities to both excel and to earn
leadership role responsibilities.
