Prince of the Rocks exhibition to celebrate Bristol’s epic £1.4m Bring Turner Home campaign
Bristol Museum & Art Gallery will open a new free exhibition this weekend celebrating JMW Turner’s early links to the city. Prince of the Rocks has been created as a thank you to the thousands of supporters who backed the fundraising campaign in July to ‘Bring Turner Home’.
More than 1,700 people backed the public Crowdfunder, raising an unprecedented £109,120 in one week to try and secure Turner’s recently rediscovered The Rising Squall – painted in Bristol when the artist was just 17. Together with national funders and private donors, the museum went to the Sotheby’s auction with a £1.4 million bid, the largest fundraising effort in its history.
Sadly outbid on the night by an anonymous UK private collector, the campaign showed the strength of public support for Turner and Bristol’s cultural heritage.
Prince of the Rocks is the museum’s way of thanking those supporters and celebrating Turner’s links with Bristol. On display will be four rare watercolours painted during Turner’s first visit to the city in 1791, when aged just 16 he explored the Avon Gorge and earned the nickname “Prince of the Rocks.” These early works reveal his growing skill in architectural detail, natural observation and dramatic composition. Fragile by nature, they have not been displayed for over a decade and may not be seen again for some time.

EE72
EE72 is the new title launched by former Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue and European editorial director of Vogue, Edward Enninful. The launch is Enninful’s much-anticipated next move after leaving those two distinguished posts in 2023. Co-founded with his sister Akua Enninful, the magazine takes its name from the year Enninful was born and covers fashion, beauty, luxury and culture. Editorially and stylistically EE72 is hardly innovative and not a galaxy away from Vogue, but the roster for this first outing is impressive with the likes of Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Pharrell, Oprah, Gwyneth, Lila Moss and many others.

Our October issue is out next week!
We’re not afraid of the dark here at The Bristol Magazine. In fact, we’re welcoming in the longer evenings and embracing spooky season with a bumper selection of things to do and see for the whole family in October (helping you fill that half-term diary in a jiffy).
Bill Ward – the actor who was once a regular on Emmerdale and Coronation Street and is now in a stage production of The Shawshank Redemption – talks to us about his lifelong photography projects, with the latest one culminating in new, immersive book that puts you in the centre of a breaking wave; we wrap up warm with our editor’s fashion picks from Jigsaw; we hear from inclusive dancers Kittiwake Border Morris about their ‘joyfully chaotic’ approach to the tradition; we wander into the forest with artist and ambler Man in the Woods; and don our aprons with chef and writer Claire Thomson, who gives us the inside scoop on her new cookbook Mushroom.
There’s plenty more where that came from, too.

St Peter’s Hospice Art Exhibition, 4 October
This event is to showcase artworks created by St Peter’s Hospice patients who attend a Wednesday afternoon painting wellbeing group.
The group enables patients to come to the Hospice, some brought in by volunteer drivers, and for them to partake in an activity that makes them feel like a person, not a patient, and they become absorbed in something that takes them away from their worries.
Volunteer Art Tutor David Hunter demonstrates techniques and teaches our patients to use watercolours, acrylics, pastels and charcoal. At the exhibition there will also be art created by staff who attended a staff wellbeing painting group that David ran earlier in the year.
10.30am - 4pm | St Peter’s Hospice, Charlton Road, Brentry, BS10 6NL | Free entry
Money raised from the sale of artwork and crafts will go to the work of the Hospice

This autumn, the Bristol Bach Choir are focusing on the music of Bach, Brahms, and Bruckner, three very different composers. Tickets are also available for the choir's concerts in St George's before Christmas (13 December) and a performance of Bach's Mass in B Minor (21 March 2026) with Bristol Ensemble Baroque. Sing the B Minor choruses with them on 9 November at their Choral Workshop.

Leigh Lodge is a stunning family home; beautifully renovated and lovingly refurbished by the current owners who commissioned renowned Bristol based design & build firm Moon to comprehensibly redesign and refurbish the house. The result is nothing short of exquisite; with an eye-catching level of attention to detail internally, whilst simultaneously landscaping the extensive gardens and grounds externally; complete with the installation of a new heated outdoor pool, glazed summer house and the creation of garden stores, fruit beds and garden walkways.
To the front, electric double gates give way to an expanse of tarmac parking; in addition to the garage, extensive workshop and additional storage. The front garden, neatly walled from the road and driveway with a secure pedestrian gate has also been beautifully landscaped with formal parterres centred around a Corten steel water feature. The entrance hall is magnificent; with its original flag-stone floor opening up via an ornamental arch to the stunning turned balustrade central staircase, itself leading to the upper floors.
The sitting room is exquisite; with a stripped wooden floor and beautiful natural light flooding in from the oversize triple sash bay-window overlooking the gorgeous gardens and pool beyond. A cast-iron wood burning stove provides additional warmth in the winter whilst the attractive marble surround a focal point for the room. Adjacent to the sitting room is a charming family room / snug – perfect for weekend sports' or family film, or to hunker down with a good book. From the entrance hall, the dining room provides a perfect entertaining space; adjacent to the kitchen with a stripped wooden floor and a feature open fireplace, flanked by a recessed alcove perfect for housing the drinks cabinet.
The kitchen itself is exquisite; tailored to create the very most of the space it centres around the electric AGA and over-sized island & breakfast bar. The layout is immensely sociable for both day-to-day family life as well as larger entertaining events; with a wide breakfast bar overlooking the ceramic hob – perfect if the AGA its turned off over the summer months.
Within the kitchen there is plenty of space for an informal breakfast table and chairs, with the room opening out to the rear to a charming garden room with a full-width wall of sliding glazed doors leading out the garden itself. To the side is a useful day-to-day door to the gated parking outside – perfect for quick entry with shopping and children, and is flanked by a beautifully-appointed boot room with space and hanging for all the family's kit, as well as access to a second ground floor cloakroom & w.c.
Upstairs, the original turned balustrade staircase leads to the upper floors, with a fabulous home-office engineered within the deep first floor landing space, capturing the natural light from twin sash windows. Like downstairs, the rooms are beautifully decorated with pops of colour, individual wallpapers and feature cast-iron radiators, with enough space over the two floors for families of all ages and size. Across the first floor lies the stunning master-suite with its dressing room and en-suite shower room, as well as far reaching views across the rear garden.
Two further bedrooms with two bath / shower rooms (one en-suite) make up the remainder of the first floor space, as well as an incredibly useful walk-in shelved linen cupboard. Across the top floor lie three further double bedrooms as well as a playroom and well-appointed family bath & shower room; with the two rear bedrooms enjoying the best views of the house, right across the Bristol channel to Wales.
Undoubtedly the gardens and grounds of Leigh Lodge help separate it from the mere “ordinary”; expertly landscaped to capture and enjoy the sun from sunrise to sunset they centre off the rear of the house, leading down to the (air-source) heated swimming pool, glazed pool house (complete with gas-fired fire-pit) and a large paved dining terrace running across the full width of the house. The lawn literally extends into the distance, giving families plenty of room for games and outdoor activities as well as explore the mature flower beds and established fruit cages.
