FORT CARSON, CO - 4th Infantry Division Public Affairs Office
Photo and Story by Staff Sgt. Benjamin Northcutt
FORT CARSON, Colo. – Competitions and boards are frequent assessments for a Soldier’s potential, and a challenge to rise to. These events test a Soldier’s physical fitness, critical thinking ability, Army knowledge, leadership skills, and job specific aptitude. For one Fort Carson Soldier, she took up the challenge and rose to the occasion.
U.S. Army Spc. Sheyla Ixmatlahua, a human resources specialist (42A) assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division competed with other Soldiers over three days, encompassing nine events testing their knowledge and physical fitness, ultimately winning the U.S. Army Forces Command Adjutant General Soldier of the Year at Fort Liberty, NC.
“I heard about the competition back in November after the promotion board,” Ixmatlahua said. “I was told that it was a competition for Adjutant General Soldiers, and I thought it was a brigade level or local one.”
Ixmatlahua explained that she didn’t realize until afterward that she volunteered for the FORSCOM level competition. As an HR professional, a Soldier needs to be agile, a value-added leader, and an expert who performs Essential Personnel Services. For Capt. Travis Hayes the 1-12th Inf. Reg. battalion Human Resources Officer in Charge, it was an easy choice of who exemplifies the right person for the competition.

March 25th is National Medal of Honor Day and a United States Federal Holiday that is celebrated every year on March 25th. National Medal of Honor Day is to “foster public appreciation and recognition of Medal of Honor Recipients.” March 25th was chosen because it was on March 25, 1863, that the first Medals of Honor were presented to six members of Andrews' Raiders.
March 29th the nation recognizes National Vietnam War Veterans Day on the anniversary of the date the last combat troops left South Vietnam in 1973. We honor Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service and remember the men and women who put the lives of others ahead of their own to serve during one of America’s longest foreign wars.

We are pleased to announce that John Harris has ‘stepped up’ to take on the role of Assistant Ivy Leaves Editor. We formed an Editorial Board to help with the Editors workload and this will continue as we transition the position going forward.
There are several special and historic days on the March calendar each year; to include March 21st the Battle of Suoi Tre, in 1967 in Vietnam, March 25th is National Medal of Honor Day, and March 29th is National Vietnam War Veterans Day. We will remember and honor all who served on these important days.
Sadly, we have learned of the passing of WWII D-Day Veteran Harper H. Coleman (age 101). Harper was a machine gunner with H/2-8 INF who landed in the first wave on Utah Beach. Services will be held on March 8th in Tucson, AZ with interment on March 26th, 2024, at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, May He rest in peace.
Enjoy your spring season and better weather. Remember to reach out to our members who are dealing with illnesses and other health issues and let them know you are thinking about them.
