Meet Ben Struhar of Troop 90

Ben (12 years old) is the winner of the 2022 Heroism Award after being nominated for helping save the lives of not only his sister, but his friend, and father as well.

During a family boat outing on the lake last summer, Ben noticed a situation unfolding that could have had life altering ramifications. Ben's sister was overly confident about swimming without a life jacket, when she started being carried away by the current. His friend was also in the water and being carried by the current, but he was fortunately wearing his life jacket. 

Ben realized what was happening and he tried to toss a lifejacket to his sister, but it landed too far from her to be helpful due the windy conditions on the lake that day. Ben's dad jumped in to recover his daughter, but once he got her back onto the boat, he started to go under the water. Remaining calm he located another life jacket to throw to his dad. Ben then pulled the anchors for the boat, turned the boat on, and maneuvered the vessel towards his father to help get him back onboard.
