Dear ,
I hope you are well and have enjoyed a restful and fun summer. It has been a busy few months at Together We Learn with many surprises, both positive and some concerning.
We were so delighted to host our Ethiopia Country Director, Elsa, in July on her first visit to the UK. During her time here, it was wonderful to meet so many of you in person at our supporter event in London and to visit schools across England. Elsa has now rightly returned to her maternity leave at home, and will share an update about her trip in the Autumn.
The excitement of the trip was followed by alarming news from the Amhara region in August, when militias overran a number of towns and airports, including Gondar, where our main team is based. Order has been restored by the army in most urban areas but it was a very tense situation that will continue to impact our projects and students in the region.
Nonetheless, our team and the communities we support were keen to get back to normal as soon as they were able and we had children and parents attending our after-school and pre-school clubs within the week. There is still no internet connection so we ask for your patience on sponsorship updates, but the team on the ground are doing everything they can to help get ready for the new school year.
We will be hosting an online event to mark Ethiopian New Year this September 12th with author Elizabeth Laird. Read on to find out more about the event and some exciting progress on our projects this summer.
Thank you for being part of our mission and supporting our work!
Best wishes,
Caroline Walker
