Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Faith
Calls for Perseverance”
Aim:
Know Jesus
sacrificial
death opens the way to the presence or God;
Feel
the importance
of
holding
on to faith in Jesus;
and Share
our
faith with others.
Background:
Hebrews
10:19-31
Bible
Lesson:
Hebrews
10:19-31
“Let
us hold fast the profession of [our] faith without wavering; (for he
[is] faithful that promised;)” Heb rews
10:23
KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
theme of our new quarter
is “A Living Faith.” The first lesson in this
quarter begins with a a
study in the New Testament
Book of Hebrews. It is one
of the twenty one epistles or letters of the New Testament. It’s
authorship has been attributed to Paul, Apollos, Priscilla, or Barnabas; however, the actual author is uncertain. It’s intended audience are Jewish
converts to Christianity who are being encouraged to hold fast to
their faith in Jesus Christ, even with the strong pull by some who
wanted to mix Judaism with
Christianity. The theme of the Book of Hebrews is the Superiority
and sufficiency of Jesus Christ as the revealer and mediator of
God’s grace. The author
emphasizes the superiority of Jesus Christ’s Priesthood
and the New Covenant to the
Levitical priesthood and the Mosaic covenant.
- Hebrews
10:19-21,
The
Priesthood of Christ
Is Superior:
The
author continues presenting
his
evidence
that
Jesus’ Priesthood is
superior to the Levitical priesthood. In the Levitical system there
was an area in the tabernacle and later in the temple called
the Holy of Holies which was
separated
by a heavy curtain. Only the High Priest was allowed to enter this
area once a year on the Day of Atonement, to offer sacrifices for
the sins
of the people and for himself. The sacrifices were unblemished
animals as specified in the Levitical
Law. The blood of these animals provided temporary atonement for
their
sins.
The sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on Calvary was a once and for
all atonement for humankind’s sin for those who accept Jesus
Christ as Lord and Savior. Jesus
was both the Priest and the Perfect Sacrifice. With the blood of
Jesus, believers are now allowed to approach the presence of God
with boldness not once a year, but as often as needed. The temple is
now in the heart of each believer. Our High Priest, Jesus Christ,
made this all possible. The
Levitical Priest had
to offer a sacrifice for himself along with the sacrifice for the
people.
The
High Priest Jesus
was
sinless and had no
sins for which He needed atonement. What a wonderful opportunity to
enter the presence of God through faith in Jesus Christ, our High
Priest!
- Hebrews
10:22-25,
The
Priesthood of Christ
and
Our Profession of Faith:
In
the Levitical System the High Priest had
to first
be cleansed and sanctified before entering the Holy of Holies.
Believers in Jesus Christ, first believe in our hearts in Jesus
Christ, confess with our mouths that Jesus is the Son of God, and
willing accept water baptism identify with Christ in His death,
burial, and resurrection. The outward symbol of baptism testifies
to a change that has been wrought in our hearts when we accept Jesus
as Lord and Savior of our lives. Our conscience is cleared by the
forgiveness of our sins by faith in Jesus Christ. Even as a
Christian, Satan will continue his quest to draw us away from God;
however, we must hold fast to our faith in God with confidence that
the promise of salvation through Jesus Christ is
irrevocable
and God always keeps His Promises. We as believers are urged to
assemble and join with other like minded
believers
in Jesus Christ to worship, to praise, and to give thanks to our
God. As we testify to His Goodness and His Providential Care, we
encourage others who are encountering life’s
challenges and
we also
receive
encouragement
from
the testimony of others for life challenges yet to be faced. The
building up or edifying of the body of believers results in
acts
of love and works of kindness that may draw unbelievers to Christ.
Oh what a fellowship divine to share our love of our God together
and what a witness for a dying world to see!
-
Hebrews
10:26-27,
The Priesthood of Christ and
Knowledge of the Truth:
The
author warns that once we as believers receive the true knowledge of
the Gospel, we cannot willfully continue in sin. All believers sin
and come short of the glory of God, but forgiveness is available
through sorrowful confession to God and a
request
for His forgiveness. For those who reject the offer of salvation by
Jesus Christ, there is only eternal
death and damnation, a permanent separation from God in Hell’s
Fire. Such a permanent and eternal condemnation is to be avoided
at all cost. Life is brief and our time of departure is uncertain,
this
necessitates an urgency in accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and
Savior!
-
Hebrews
10:28-31,
The Priesthood of Christ and
How God Will Judge His People: The
author reminds the readers that under the Mosaic Law, violators
faced death with the testimony of two or three witnesses.
How much more serious is the rejection of Jesus Christ’s offer of
salvation through His death on Calvary’s Cross for our sins!
One’s rejection of the atoning
blood
shed by Jesus for our sins, leaves one yet condemned to death, not
only physical death but Eternal Death, permanent separation from
God. God
is
the Righteous Judge. The
author concludes our study with the horrible circumstance of a non
believer falling into the Hands of the Living God without the
benefit of the mediation of Jesus Christ on his behalf!
Take
Aways:
- We
have freedom through our faith in Jesus Christ to boldly approach
the presence our Creator
- Jesus
Christ’s sacrificial death on Calvary’s Cross provided cleansing
of our sins not just a temporary covering.
- The
joy of our salvation should cause us to want to share our testimony
of God’s Goodness, Jesus’ Saving Power, and the Peace with God
brought about with accepting His Son as Lord and Savior.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“How
shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first
began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them
that heard [him];” Hebrews
2:3 KJV
“Be
it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the
name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised
from the dead, [even] by him doth this man stand here before you
whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders,
which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in
any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men,
whereby we must be saved.” Act s4:10-12
KJV
“Wherefore
God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above
every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of
[things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the
earth; And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is]
Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians
2:9-11
KJV
“Seeing
then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the
heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast [our] profession.
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the
feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we
are, yet] without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne
of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of
need.” Hebrews
4:14-16 KJV
“Looking
unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy
that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and
is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews
12:2 KJV
