Atrocity prevention requires gender equality

Dear friends,

Almost exactly one year ago, we commemorated the 20th anniversary of the adoption of UNSC resolution 1325, highlighting the role of women in the peace and security agenda. On this occasion, it was widely deplored that women’s participation at the decision-making table was still marginal, and that impunity for conflict-related sexual and gender-based crimes remained a crude reality.

These sad observations are very much true to this day. As the UN Secretary General highlighted, the pandemic has all but increased gender-based inequalities. His conclusion echoes GAAMAC’s belief: “The current pandemic is a gendered crisis, and no effective response can be gender-blind”.

Since GAAMAC III in 2018, GAAMAC has recognized the participation of women and girls as a cornerstone of effective atrocity prevention. We wish GAAMAC IV, which will take place in November, to go even further in the amplification of women’s voices and needs.

I hope that you will join us in this crucial endeavour, and thank you as usual for your support.
