Word From Debare Awogbemi

Unity For The Manifestation Of God's Glory

11 October 2020

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Acts 1:8(NKJV)

As we reflect on the theme verse in Acts 1:8, it becomes clear the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is entirely at the discretion of God alone to do. Jesus confirmed this in Acts 1:7 stating it is something “the Father has put in His own authority” (and not man’s authority)

It makes one wonder if there are some things that God has put in man’s authority. Reading the rest of the book of Acts, one may notice one such thing that is at the discretion of man. It is the choice to walk and work in unity of purpose (one accord) as believers. In quite a few instances we read about the things the disciples did in one accord:

  • Acts 1: 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication
  • Acts 2: 1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place
  • Acts 2: 46-47 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God.
  • Acts 4: 24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them.

Even as God intends to pour out His spirit on us in this season, He is looking to His people in His church to work in one accord. God will not come down from heaven to force us to work in one accord. We must arrive at that ourselves. Working with one accord involves choosing to focus on what unites us and not what divides us. It involves forgiving one another and helping one another. It involves thinking, speaking, and acting in love; and in ways that foster unity and not division. It requires the humility to lay down the things that bruise our egos and charge our emotions, for the sober consideration of God’s greater purpose at all times. When the power of the Holy Spirit is poured on the power of unity the outcome will be new, unstoppable manifestations of God’s glory as God Himself attests to in Gen 11: 6 “And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.” May God withhold nothing good from us in this season in Jesus name. Amen
