This House Is Haunted is a striking homage to the classic nineteenth-century ghost story. Set in Norfolk in 1867, Eliza Caine responds to an ad for a governess position at Gaudlin Hall. When she arrives at the hall, shaken by an unsettling disturbance that occurred during her travels, she is greeted by the two children now in her care, Isabella and Eustace. There is no adult present to represent her mysterious employer, and the children offer no explanation. Later that night in her room, another terrifying experience further reinforces the sense that something is very wrong. From the moment Eliza rises the following morning, her every step seems dogged by a malign presence that lives within Gaudlin’s walls. Eliza realizes that if she and the children are to survive its violent attentions, she must first uncover the hall’s long-buried secrets and confront the demons of its past. Clever, captivating, and witty, This House Is Haunted is pure entertainment with a catch.

11/1/22 - Tor Books - $18.99
From Susan Dennard, the New York Times bestselling author of the Witchlands series, comes a haunting and high-octane contemporary fantasy, about the magic it takes to face your fears in a nightmare-filled forest, and the mettle required to face the secrets hiding in the dark corners of your own family.
Hemlock Falls isn't like other towns. You won't find it on a map, your phone won't work here, and the forest outside town might just kill you.
Winnie Wednesday wants nothing more than to join the Luminaries, the ancient order that protects Winnie's town—and the rest of humanity—from the monsters and nightmares that rise in the forest of Hemlock Falls every night.
Ever since her father was exposed as a witch and a traitor, Winnie and her family have been shunned. But on her sixteenth birthday, she can take the deadly Luminary hunter trials and prove herself true and loyal—and restore her family's good name. Or die trying.
But in order to survive, Winnie enlists the help of the one person who can help her train: Jay Friday, resident bad boy and Winnie’s ex-best friend. While Jay might be the most promising new hunter in Hemlock Falls, he also seems to know more about the nightmares of the forest than he should. Together, he and Winnie will discover a danger lurking in the forest no one in Hemlock Falls is prepared for.
Not all monsters can be slain, and not all nightmares are confined to the dark.

The gripping new Jack Reacher thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling authors Lee Child and Andrew Child
“No Plan B is not to be missed. A perfectly plotted, fast-paced thriller, with bigger twists than ever before. It’s no wonder Jack Reacher is everyone’s favorite rebel hero.”—Karin Slaughter
In Gerrardsville, Colorado, a woman dies under the wheels of a moving bus. The death is ruled a suicide. But Jack Reacher saw what really happened: A man in a gray hoodie and jeans, moving stealthily, pushed the victim to her demise—before swiftly grabbing the dead woman’s purse and strolling away.
When another homicide is ruled an accident, Reacher knows this is no coincidence. With a killer on the loose, Reacher has no time to waste to track down those responsible.
But Reacher is unaware that these crimes are part of something much larger and more far-reaching: an arsonist out for revenge, a foster kid on the run, a cabal of powerful people involved in a secret conspiracy with many moving parts. There is no room for error, but they make a grave one. They don’t consider Reacher a threat. “There’s too much at stake to start running from shadows.” But Reacher isn’t a shadow. He is flesh and blood. And relentless when it comes to making things right.
For when the threat is Reacher, there is No Plan B.

Fiction Addiction's Featured Reader: Ashley Poston, New York Times Bestselling Author
We're excited to be implementing a new segment in our monthly newsletter: Fiction Addiction's Featured Reader! Everyone has a story behind the books that mean the most to them, and we want to tell yours. Want to be featured? Reply to this email and let us know, and you might see yourself in an upcoming newsletter!
What was your favorite childhood read and why?
My favorite childhood read was, actually, a fanfiction! Though since it's been lost to time, it feels a bit like cheating. I really loved the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer, too. I read them cover to cover multiple times. Some kids were Harry Potter kids, others were Animorphs, Babysitter's Club, Sweetvalley High -- I was one-hundred and ten percent an Artemis Fowl girl. I still go back and reread them when I want a laugh. They're so charming, and hold up surprisingly well!
Do you have a go-to comfort book that you’ve read over and over?
Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. Whenever I feel sad, or anxious, or whenever I need a warm hug, I always pop in my earbuds and listen to the audiobook. There is just something so soft and warm about the narration about a slitherer-outer of a wizard and his cleaning lady.
Why do you love reading?
Because it's reading. That's really the best way I can describe it! I love reading because that's exactly what it is -- reading. I love the way authors weave words together. I love learning about far-off places, and reading about daring sword fights, and guessing the prince in disguise. I just love everything about it. Reading is a solemn, lonely endeavor, but somehow when I'm reading, I never feel alone at all.
What’s the best book you’ve read so far this year?
This year, my favorite book has to be Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. It's such a wild ride and a heartfelt read. Definitely go in not knowing anything about it! Best experience, by far.
What’s on your nightstand right now?
Right now on my nightstand is Love in the Time of Serial Killers by Alicia Thompson and The Princess and the Scoundrel by Beth Revis!

“One step away from our world lies another: a land of violent fantasies, of sharp-toothed delights. . . .”
Of all the things aspiring artist Haven Marbury expected to find while clearing out her late father’s remote seaside house, Bedtime Stories for Monsters was not on the list. This secret handwritten manuscript is disturbingly different from his Pulitzer-winning works: its interweaving short stories crawl with horrific monsters and enigmatic humans that exist somewhere between this world and the next. The stories unsettle but also entice Haven, practically compelling her to illustrate them while she stays in the house that her father warned her was haunted. Clearly just dementia whispering in his ear . . . right?
Reeling from a failed marriage, Haven hopes an illustrated Bedtime Stories can be the lucrative posthumous father-daughter collaboration she desperately needs to jump-start her art career. However, everyone in the nearby vacation town wants a piece of the manuscript: her father’s obsessive literary salon members, the Ink Drinkers; her mysterious yet charming neighbor, who has a tendency toward three a.m. bonfires; a young barista with a literary forgery business; and of course, whoever keeps trying to break into her house. But when a monstrous creature appears under Haven’s bed right as grisly deaths are reported in the nearby woods, she must race to uncover dark, otherworldly family secrets—completely rewriting everything she ever knew about herself in the process.

10/18/22 - Harper Perennial - $18.00
When Ex-Detective Inspector Daniel Hawthorne and his sidekick, author Anthony Horowitz, are invited to an exclusive literary festival on Alderney, an idyllic island off the south coast of England, they don’t expect to find themselves in the middle of murder investigation—or to be trapped with a cold-blooded killer in a remote place with a murky, haunted past.
Arriving on Alderney, Hawthorne and Horowitz soon meet the festival’s other guests—an eccentric gathering that includes a bestselling children’s author, a French poet, a TV chef turned cookbook author, a blind psychic, and a war historian—along with a group of ornery locals embroiled in an escalating feud over a disruptive power line.
When a local grandee is found dead under mysterious circumstances, Hawthorne and Horowitz become embroiled in the case. The island is locked down, no one is allowed on or off, and it soon becomes horribly clear that a murderer lurks in their midst. But who?
Both a brilliant satire on the world of books and writers and an immensely enjoyable locked-room mystery, A Line to Kill is a triumph—a riddle of a story full of brilliant misdirection, beautifully set-out clues, and diabolically clever denouements.

10/18/22 - Harper - $32.50
“Anyone will tell you the born of this world are marked from the get-out, win or lose.”
Demon Copperhead is set in the mountains of southern Appalachia. It’s the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.
Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind.

Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start. And for just a short while, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school, and Lily can’t help but fall for him, too. With Ash, she feels happy for the first time. Yet at times, she wonders if she can trust him completely. . . . Then one day, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. But she would be lying if she didn’t acknowledge the flashes of his father’s temper in Ash, and as the case against him unfolds, she realizes he’s hidden more than he’s shared with her. Mad Honey is a riveting novel of suspense, an unforgettable love story, and a moving and powerful exploration of the secrets we keep and the risks we take in order to become ourselves.

#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham returns to Mississippi in his most gripping legal thriller yet, the riveting story of two sons of immigrant families who grow up as friends, but ultimately find themselves on opposite sides of the law. Grisham’s trademark twists and turns will keep you tearing through the pages until the stunning conclusion.
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia. Keith Rudy and Hugh Malco grew up in Biloxi in the sixties and were childhood friends, as well as Little League all-stars. But as teenagers, their lives took them in different directions. Keith’s father became a legendary prosecutor, determined to “clean up the Coast.” Hugh’s father became the “Boss” of Biloxi’s criminal underground. Keith went to law school and followed in his father’s footsteps. Hugh preferred the nightlife and worked in his father’s clubs. The two families were headed for a showdown, one that would happen in a courtroom. Life itself hangs in the balance in The Boys from Biloxi, a sweeping saga rich with history and with a large cast of unforgettable characters.

10/25/22 - Alfred A. Knopf - $30.00
The best-selling, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Road returns with the first of a two-volume masterpiece: The Passenger is the story of a salvage diver, haunted by loss, afraid of the watery deep, pursued for a conspiracy beyond his understanding, and longing for a death he cannot reconcile with God.
Look for Stella Maris, the second volume in The Passenger series, on sale December 6th, 2022
1980, PASS CHRISTIAN, MISSISSIPPI: It is three in the morning when Bobby Western zips the jacket of his wet suit and plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. Missing from the crash site are the pilot’s flight bag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. But how? A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit—by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul. Traversing the American South, from the garrulous barrooms of New Orleans to an abandoned oil rig off the Florida coast, The Passenger is a breathtaking novel of morality and science, the legacy of sin, and the madness that is human consciousness.

10/4/22 - Penguin Press - $28.00
From the #1 bestselling author of Little Fires Everywhere, comes one of the most highly anticipated books of the year – the inspiring new novel about a mother’s unbreakable love in a world consumed by fear.
Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving but broken father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. Bird knows to not ask too many questions, stand out too much, or stray too far. For a decade, their lives have been governed by laws written to preserve “American culture” in the wake of years of economic instability and violence. To keep the peace and restore prosperity, the authorities are now allowed to relocate children of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin, and libraries have been forced to remove books seen as unpatriotic—including the work of Bird’s mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet who left the family when he was nine years old. Bird has grown up disavowing his mother and her poems; he doesn’t know her work or what happened to her, and he knows he shouldn’t wonder. But when he receives a mysterious letter containing only a cryptic drawing, he is pulled into a quest to find her. His journey will take him back to the many folktales she poured into his head as a child, through the ranks of an underground network of librarians, into the lives of the children who have been taken, and finally to New York City, where a new act of defiance may be the beginning of much-needed change. Our Missing Hearts is an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can ignore the most searing injustice. It’s a story about the power—and limitations—of art to create change, the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children, and how any of us can survive a broken world with our hearts intact.

10/4/22 - Alfred A. Knopf - $29.00
A transporting, irresistible debut novel that takes its heroine, Cristabel Seagrave, from the gargantuan cavity of a beached whale into undercover operations during World War II—a story of love, bravery, lost innocence, and self-transformation.
“Utterly heartbreaking and joyous ... I just disappeared into The Whalebone Theatre and didn’t want to leave.” —Jo Baker, author of Longbourn
One blustery night in 1928, a whale washes up on the shores of the English Channel. By law, it belongs to the King, but twelve-year-old orphan Cristabel Seagrave has other plans. She and the rest of the household—her sister, Flossie; her brother, Digby, long-awaited heir to Chilcombe manor; Maudie Kitcat, kitchen maid; Taras, visiting artist—build a theatre from the beast’s skeletal rib cage. Within the Whalebone Theatre, Cristabel can escape her feckless stepparents and brisk governesses, and her imagination comes to life.
As Cristabel grows into a headstrong young woman, World War II rears its head. She and Digby become British secret agents on separate missions in Nazi-occupied France—a more dangerous kind of playacting, it turns out, and one that threatens to tear the family apart.

She changed the world with her discovery. Three men took the credit.

Rosalind knows if she just takes one more X-ray picture—one more after thousandsfishe can unlock the building blocks of life. Never again will she have to listen to her colleagues complain about her, especially Maurice Wilkins who'd rather conspire about genetics with James Watson and Francis Crick than work alongside her.

Marie Benedict's powerful new novel shines a light on a woman who sacrificed her life to discover the nature of our very DNA, a woman whose world-changing contributions were hidden by the men around her but whose relentless drive advanced our understanding of humankind.

From the magical moments on set as Draco Malfoy to the challenges of growing up in the spotlight, get a backstage pass into Tom Felton’s life on and off the big screen.
Tom Felton’s adolescence was anything but ordinary. His early rise to fame in beloved films like The Borrowers catapulted him into the limelight, but nothing could prepare him for what was to come after he landed the iconic role of the Draco Malfoy, the bleached blonde villain of the Harry Pottermovies. For the next ten years, he was at the center of a huge pop culture phenomenon and yet, in between filming, he would go back to being a normal teenager trying to fit into a normal school. Speaking with great candor and his signature humor, Tom shares his experience growing up as part of the wizarding world while also trying to navigate the muggle world. He tells stories from his early days in the business like his first acting gig where he was mistaken for fellow blonde child actor Macaulay Culkin and his Harry Potter audition where, in a very Draco-like move, he fudged how well he knew the books the series was based on (not at all). He reflects on his experiences working with cinematic greats such as Alan Rickman, Sir Michael Gambon, Dame Maggie Smith, and Ralph Fiennes (including that awkward Voldemort hug). And, perhaps most poignantly, he discusses the lasting relationships he made over that decade of filming, including with Emma Watson, who started out as a pesky nine-year-old whom he mocked for not knowing what a boom mic was but who soon grew into one of his dearest friends. Then, of course, there are the highs and lows of fame and navigating life after such a momentous and life-changing experience. Tom Felton’s Beyond the Wand is an entertaining, funny, and poignant must-read for any Harry Potter fan. Prepare to meet a real-life wizard.

From the New York Times bestselling author of WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, Nikki Haley's sharply intimate and inspirational book celebrates the world's most iconic women leaders.
“If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.” —Margaret Thatcher
In the spirit of Thatcher’s quote, Ambassador Nikki R. Haley offers inspiring examples of women who worked against obstacles and opposition to get things done—including Haley herself. As a brown girl growing up in Bamberg, South Carolina, no one would have predicted she would become the first minority female governor in America, the first female and the first minority governor in South Carolina, or the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Her journey wasn’t an easy one. She faced many people who thought she didn’t belong—and who told her so. She was too brown. Too female. Too young. Too conservative. Too principled. Too idealistic. As far as Nikki was concerned, those were not reasons to hold her back. Those were all reasons to forge ahead.
She drew inspiration from other trailblazing women throughout history who summoned the courage to be different and lead. This personal and compelling book celebrates ten remarkable women who dared to be bold, from household names like Margaret Thatcher and Israel’s former prime minister Golda Meir, to Jeane Kirkpatrick, the first female U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, to lesser-known leaders like human rights activist Cindy Warmbier, education advocate Virginia Walden Ford, civil rights pioneer Claudette Colvin, and more. Woven with stories from Haley’s own childhood and political career,
If You Want Something Donewill inspire the next generation of leaders.

There is a door at the end of a silent corridor. And it's haunting Harry Potter's dreams. Why else would he be waking in the middle of the night, screaming in terror? This is the story of how I became Anne of Greenville. It’s also the story of how I found my true true, and how I needed to maybe come to Greenville, of all places, to make that happen.
In this modern reimagining of Anne of Green Gables, Anne is an ABBA-loving singer/actor/writer of disco-operas, queer, Japanese-American who longs to be understood for her artistic genius. Recently relocated to middle-of-nowhere Greenville and starting at a new school, Anne has a tendency to A) fall in love quickly, deeply, and effervescently and B) fly off the handle in the face of jerks. Both personality quirks quickly come into play when the soccer team boos the premiere of her disco performance, which—in a roundabout way—introduces her to her new BFF, Berry, and she soon after meets the girl of her dreams, Gilly.
Falling quickly into that age-old trap of ignoring the best friend for the new crush, Anne soon becomes embroiled in a series of dramatic and unfortunate events, and quickly finds herself wrapped up in a love triangle she never expected. Is she MTB with Gilly? Or is Berry her true soul mate? Only time (or 304 pages) will tell.
In this coming-of-age novel by fan-favorite author Mariko Tamaki, see the classic tale in a whole new light. Refreshingly bold and unapologetically unique, Anne of Greenville will make you want to stand up and sing!

Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order: Why Nations Succeed and Fail by Ray Dalio
|
|
It's as if Isaac Asimov based the protagonist of his 1942 novel, Foundation, on Ray Dalio, but Ray wasn't even born until 1949. Ray, the founder of the enormously successful hedge fund, Bridgewater, has applied the same techniques he used so successfully at Bridgewater (compile reams of historical data, develop theories and decision rules, backtest your theories with the help of computers against your historical data, refine and repeat) to understanding the rise and fall of empires and where the US currently stands, especially in relation to China. This is a very dense read, but it brings clarity to so many current events. One of my top reads of the year.

Can We Talk About Israel?: A Guide for the Curious, Confused, and Conflicted by Daniel Sokatch
|
|
I am technically Jewish (my mom is Jewish) but I was raised Christian and never really learned anything about Israel in school. I found this book very informative and well presented and think the author did a good job of trying to convey all the positions, while still advocating for his own. The main thing the book convinced me of is that the Israel/Palestine situation has broad implications for democracy as a whole and thus should be of interest to most Americans.

Always the First to Die by R. J. Jacobs
|
|
Always the First to Die is a thriller set at the scene of a true horror story that was actually the filming of a very famous horror film. An isolated mansion that has always been considered haunted on an island in the Florida keys with a hurricane coming is the setting and couldn't be more apropos. Not to mention it takes place on Halloween weekend. Creepy and suspenseful with lots and lots of references to famous slasher films and thrillers, this was a fun read, even if a little predictable. Perfect for fans of Riley Sager and Grady Hendrix.

No Strangers Here by Carlene O'Connor
|
|
A small picturesque Irish village where everyone knows everyone, a rich entitled family that no one likes, a loveable veterinarian in the beginning phases of dementia, his estranged wife who reads people's fortunes, and their daughter, also a veterinarian, who experienced such trauma as a young girl that she hasn't been home in 27 years are all central to this beautifully written story. Throw in a murder and a smart, determined police detective and you have a terrific police procedural and the start of a wonderful new series. Unlike her previous books this is not a cozy. While a little darker than many cozies it is not gory and descriptive. Highly recommended for fans of Ann Cleeves and Louise Penney.

Anywhere You Run by Wanda M. Morris
|
|
Anywhere You Run is not an easy read because it reveals the reality of what it was like being black in the south in the sixties at the start of the civil rights movement. But it is a beautifully written story of two Black sisters and the decisions they make, right or wrong, which shape their lives and their futures. It is powerful, intense, and heartbreaking but also a story of hope and change and one we should not forget.

The Matchmaker's Gift by Lynda Cohen Loigman
|
|
Sara has a gift: she can see soulmates. She makes her first match in 1910 at 10 years old on the ship to the US, introducing her sister to her future husband. It's not something that's encouraged, though, with grown, married men being the traditional Jewish matchmakers. But Sara persists, making several big-name matches throughout her life. In 1994, Sara's granddaughter Abby, a successful divorce attorney, struggles with Sara's death and with evidence that she might have inherited her grandmother's gift. Switching between the two timelines seamlessly, Loigman tells a beautiful story about love and family and finding something to fight for. I enjoyed reading about both Sara and Abby's lives, and the ways that love made connections in their lives, even in ways that were sometimes unexpected.

Poster Girl by Veronica Roth
|
|
Sonya grew up under the Delegation, learning morality by rewards and punishments kept track of by monitoring citizens with a required ocular implant called the Insight. In fact, hers was the face on the government's poster, a face everyone still recognizes 10 years after the revolution that resulted in the fall of the Delegation and the rise of the Triumvirate. Now Sonya and many others from Delegation families are living in a prison community, while everyone else gets to move forward without the Insight. Until someone from Sonya's past shows up unexpectedly with an offer: find a missing girl, an illegal second child that the Delegation took from her parents 10 years ago, and she can earn her freedom. What Sonya doesn't realize is that the truths she'll uncover on her journey to find the girl lead to secrets about her family that someone doesn't want to be found. I've never been a big fan of dystopian stories, but Roth's post-dystopian take is riveting. Sonya, though she's known in her life as being fairly two-dimensional, is a fascinating character who is forced to grow 10 years after her life fell apart, and the twists and turns of the mystery she's tasked with solving kept me captivated.

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
|
|
Alex is the son of the first woman POTUS. Henry is a prince of England. Alex has considered Henry to be his archenemy pretty much since they met, and he's convinced that Henry feels the same. Until one night at a party when Henry kisses Alex, and Alex has to reconsider all of his feelings. But as the children of powerful world leaders, they have to consider their image and decide what damage they could cause and whether it's worth it to them to pursue a relationship. This is such a fun book, and I found myself laughing out loud in so many places. The world can be hurtful to people who are 'other', but this book is the hope that counters that.

Ted Kennedy: A Life by John A. Farrell
|
|
Farrell's biography of Ted Kennedy may look large and imposing, but for political junkies it is a delight. It's a tribute to the man who was obviously flawed, yet became the strength for his family to carry on in times of struggle and grief. Farrell gives a unvarnished view of Chappaquiddick and its lingering effect on Kennedy's life. But we also see the strong Ted Kennedy, the 'lion of the Senate,' who worked to make possible many of the things we take for granted today. His collaboration across the aisle is remarkable when considering today's political climate.

The Nobleman's Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks by Mackenzi Lee
|
|
It's finally here! The third and final installment of the Montague siblings has arrived, and it is well worth the wait! The Nobleman's Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks introduces you to Adrienne Montague, the youngest of the Montague siblings, and the only one who is completely unaware that he has siblings. When Adriene discovers a partial spy glass that belonged to his mother, questions arise: Where did this spy glass come from And did it have anything to do with his mother's death? While searching for answers, Adriene stumbles across Henry 'Monty' Montague, the brother Adriene never knew he had. Adriene is delighted and courious to discover more about his brother, but Monty wants nothing to do with him. Yet after some persuasion, Monty decides to assist Adriene on this quest for answers. Adriene and Monty now find themselves embarking on a journey to find their sister Felicity and discover the secrets of the spy glass. But as always, a simple task for the Montague siblings will take a Herculean effort to keep out of trouble and not die. The Nobleman's Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks is one of the best books I have read this year. It's filled with laughter, very relatable characters, mystery, and ghosts. Mackenzie Lee has create a historical world that takes the reader into the past and gives us characters that we can recognize and relate to.

The Last White Man by Mohsin Hamid
|
|
The Last White Man is a thought provoking work of literature filled with empathy and depth that dives beyond the superficial, and explores the depths of what it truly means to be human. Ander awakens one morning to find that his skin has turned dark overnight. Confusion and fear become Ander’s companions. Why did this happen? Will he be accepted or shunned by his friends and family? Every places he goes and faces he sees, trepidation feels him. Do they actually see him for himself? As the phenomena grows from one to many reactions are mixed from fear and panic, scientific curiosity, and acceptance. For Ander, he must decided what is most important to him, the fear and trepidation of what he and other think when they look at him, or those whom he loves deepest. A great read for those who enjoyed Sequioa Nagamatsu’s How High We Go in the Dark.

The answer doesn't really matter because this lovely work gives us a deep dive into the relationship between a mother and daughter and the grief that follows the mother's death. We are immersed into the daughter's trip to London that celebrates her mother's vibrant and well-lived life. The Winners by Fredrik Backman
|
|
This is the conclusion to the Beartown trilogy, and it does not disappoint. The small towns of Beartown and Hed are rivals in every aspect but most especially on the ice of a hockey rink. Hockey binds this story together along with the love of family and friends and how far we would go to protect all of them. Toward the end of the book one of the characters is described as simply complicated and that phrase could just as easily describe this book. There are multiple layers underlying the rivalry between the two small towns and Backman slowly reveals each one and their connection to each other. Second chances and what the characters do with them give us a new perspective on growth, development and the bigger is always best mentality.
