Fall is a beautiful time to visit the South of France. Misty, cool mornings are great for walking. One such morning was pure Provençal magic when I saw a tree adorned in bright autumn colours reflected in the canal against a jet-black sky.
Autumn rains can be heavy, dropping the snails to the ground (see "At a Snail's Pace") after they spent the summer perched above the scorching earth.
With the grape harvest finished and fermentation and blending underway, winery staff have more time to spend with customers. At this time of year, you can visit a tasting room and have lunch in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Let's face it—cooler weather is more comfortable for sightseeing, and historic Avignon is pleasant with fewer crowds. Don't miss Les Halles, the covered market for seasonal regional produce. Often overlooked by tourists, discover why Cavaillon is worth exploring. This city was once part of the Comtat Venaissin, a Gallic territory, and before that, it was an essential settlement for the Greeks and Romans.
Now is the time to start thinking of your holiday in the South of France in 2025. Our partners are already booking accommodation well into next year. Consider booking a long-term stay and exploring the region throughout the seasons.
