And now, this month’s question comes from this guy called Dave. Dave asks “Who is my favourite Spark City character?”
Come on Dave.
That’s a fuken stupid question.
I hate them all.
That’s why I put them through so much shit. Oh, when I break them I get a happy inside. And then they cry and I’m like “Ha, that’s what you get fuker.”
Okay, obviously I’m joking. I love them all. Even the bad guys.
And yes, it’s a great question Dave, thank you for asking.
Right, growl….Ugh, I’m actually going to be semi serious and much much writer-pretentious-artist over the next little bit so like, skip ahead to the prompt.
In all honesty, it all depends on book. It also depends on how much I enjoy writing them.
In Spark City, I obviously loved Erroh. More than that, Erroh was the epitome of raw-as-fuk-writer, building a character as they went. Saying that, Emir was an absolute joy to write when he finally showed up. Funny story for those who are interested - in the original notes, I had Emir staying in Keri, getting rightly fuked. Then I said “Fuk it, I might get some leverage out of this guy.” I’m glad I kept him alive for book 2.
In March of Magnus, I really loved Lillium’s tale. She’s such a great broken, flawed character and a pleasure to write. I got so fuken upset with myself writing the scenes in the aftermath of the riot. She’s just awesome. Her fuken endurance despite the world shitting on her, despite her Alphaline tendencies to just overreact and suffer the consequences.
Outcasts. Her name is Aurora, she likes to kill. Come on. She’s the fuken best. I might have mentioned this before but when I write her, I take on some of her characteristics. I do that with all my characters, but with Aurora, there’s a little more rocking on my seat in-between paragraphs. Why? Because that’s how Aurora rolls. My wife will not engage me in conversation around the Aurora chapters. It’s probably a good thing too.
Actions of Gods- special mention to writing Lea in this one. Truthfully, I always love writing Lea and Erroh. Hand in hand, they are the bread and butter of the Spark series so I have to love them. And wow, is it fun having them at odds with each other. When I did the early, early draft of Spark and the Cull, I wrote her much, much meaner than she came out as. So much so, when Jan read it for the first time, she got so upset because she thought she was a bitch. Jan was right. Lea was a little too nasty in the first rough draft. Sometimes, listen to those around you.
However, for Actions of Gods, I truly loved doing something special for my boi Magnus. Magnus is just awesome to write and I wanted to give him a spectacular section all to himself. Hence why I did his little mini book within a larger book type thing. I felt his story needed special emphasis. And fuk me, I’ve never enjoyed writing anything more than Magnus and his zany adventures in the Savage Isles.
End of pretentious part right fuken here fukers!!!!
Oh yeah, they want me to remind you to keep sending the questions in (just reply to this email).
Not gonna lie, much of my inbox was filled with obvious praise, but also queries pertaining to the Spark City cycle. As in, “What the fuk is up with Lillium?” “Will Emir make it?” “What’s with Erroh and his need for boar?” “Seriously, does Emir make it?” “Why aren’t there more Zombies?”
I can answer that last one first. I totally want to do a Zombie novel someday. I think it would fuken rule!
As for the Spark questions, I think most have been answered what with the release of the final book in this particular cycle, with these characters. But hey, if you still have something that’ll give me nightmares that I left unfinished, please fuk off!
I mean, send them to this address.

Right, I think that’s kind of it.
My wife is about to sit down and read through the new chapters of my super secret project that absolutely has nothing to do with Spark City’s world whatsoever. So far, she’s said its her favourite book I’ve ever done. Like every chapter she’s read so far, some mad shit is about to happen, but that’s another tale for another night.
Take care of yourselves and each other guys.

Ps, the sheep are back in the field.
