Why is protein so important for a child’s growth?
When it comes to a child’s growth and development, the importance of protein isn't up for debate.
Proteins are the building blocks of body tissues. They help repair and maintain vital tissues and are crucial for the growth of all organs systems including bones and muscles. Proteins in the body also work as enzymes, immune molecules, hormones and cellular messengers.
The issue at hand is that many feeding schemes rely heavily on soy as a protein source. Morning meals are so-called fortified corn-soy blends and many lunch meals rely on a meaty flavoured soy product to satisfy children’s meat cravings. The fact is that soy on its own is not tasty so it has to be flavoured with a lot of sugar in morning meals and savoury flavours for other meals.
