Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Freedom
in Christ Jesus”
Aim: Consider the double meaning of slavery and freedom
in Jesus’ conversation with believing Jews;
Ponder
the many ways people are enslaved in current society, and Live
in the freedom that Jesus gives to those who follow Him.
Background:
John 8:31-38
Bible Lesson:
John
8:31-38
“If
the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
John 8:36 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Our Study comes from the Gospel
According to John. The book emphasizes the deity of Jesus. It begins
with announcing “… And the Word was made flesh, and
dwelt among us.” (John
1:14) The Book
concludes with a clear
statement of its purpose “And many other signs truly did
Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in
this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus
is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life
through his name.” (John 20:30-31 KJV) The
Book of John differs from the other Gospel accounts in that it
focuses on what Jesus said rather than what he did as the other
Gospel authors. The inspired author of the Book of John is the
Apostle John, one of the sons of thunder, a disciple of Jesus. Many
times he was referred to as the “disciple whom Jesus loved” and
is the disciple that Jesus (from the cross,) entrusted the care of
Mary, his mother. John Chapter 8 opens with the scribes and
Pharisees bringing a woman who was caught in the act of committing
adultery to Jesus in the temple area. Their intent was to trap or
trick Jesus. Jesus offers the poignant verdict that “He that is
without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” Jesus’
words convicted the women’s accusers and they left one by one,
beginning with eldest and concluding with the youngest. Only the
woman and Jesus remained and Jesus directs her to “go and sin no
more.” In the next section of Chapter 8, Jesus exclaims that He is
the Light of the World and that God the Father sent Him into the
World. Those who do not believe in Him shall die in their sins. He
further states that after He is crucified it will be clear that He
is the Son of God.
-
John
8:31-32, Set Free: Jesus
addresses those Jews who believed in him. He encourages them and
makes it plain that if they continue to conform and comply with His
teachings, His Word, they will then be counted as truly being His
disciples. A disciple is a follower of a leader or a teacher. In
other words, being a disciple is not just an affirmation, but
additionally there must actions and efforts that reflect such a
commitment. Jesus states that following Him will result in an
illumination of the truth. Knowledge and understanding the truth
brings freedom for true followers of Jesus.
-
John
8:33-36, Truly Free: Some
of those hearing Jesus’ offer of freedom in discipleship were
offended by His words. They immediately referenced their lineage,
being descendants of Abraham, the Father of the Faithful and falsely
claimed that they had never been in bondage. They spoke of physical
bondage, but at this very time they were under Roman control.
Perhaps the Romans did not label them as “slaves,” but their
freedom was limited by the Roman government. Furthermore, their
ancestors had been in Egyptian bondage. Never the less, Jesus spoke
of a spiritual bondage to sin. Jesus explained that when one commits
sin, s/he is a servant of sin. Humankind is born sinful and without
an acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior, there is no escape from the
bondage of sin. One lie often times soon requires another one to
cover up the initial one. Many times sin is attractive and
pleasurable; however, its consequences are extremely harmful and
deadly to all involved. Jesus moves to an analogy of a servant and a
son of a family. He explains that a servant’s status is
conditional and temporary whereas a son of a
family is permanent with
blood ties. In this case, a
servant of sin can be freed
by accepting God’s Word
and adopted as a son or
daughter of the family. Their
status changes and they then become part of the family. Those who
accept Jesus as Lord and Savior are no longer servants of sin, but
instead become children of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. As
a child of God, one is free from the fear of death, the power of
sin, the penalty
of sin, even though not yet free from the presence of sin. Only
Jesus can offer this freedom from the bond of sin into which all
humankind is born.
-
John
8:37-38, Free to Follow: Jesus
assures them that He knows
they are descendants of Abraham; however, some of them seek to kill
him because their hearts will not allow them to accept that He is
the Son of God. Each of us must accept Jesus for ourselves. Our
parents and/or relatives can be Christians and faithful followers of
Christ, but each individual must develop his or her own relationship
with the Master. In other words, the non-believers could not inherit
a relationship with Jesus from Abraham’s relationship with God.
Jesus further explains that He is the Son of God and all that He did
and said is in harmony with God the Father. On the other hand, the
non-believers may be physical descendants of Abraham; however, their
actions reflected that their fatherly advice was emanating from the
Devil, who is a liar and the father of lies and
confusion. True descendants
of Abraham would recognized that Jesus was the
Son of God and in accepting
Him, they would be free to follow Jesus in their words and deeds.
Our ability to follow Him is
made possible
by the indwelling of His Holy Spirit.
Take
Aways:
-
There
is freedom in being a Christian. Freedom from the power of sin.
Freedom from the penalty
of sin. Freedom from the fear of death. Eventually, freedom from the
presence of sin.
-
A
relationship with Jesus cannot be inherited from our parents or
relatives. We each must develop our own individual relationship with
Jesus.
-
Being
a disciple of Christ requires more than words. It requires study of
God’s Word, praying
for God’s guidance, and adherence to God’s Will and Way in our
lives.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“But
be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own
selves.” James 1:22 KJV
“But
I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good
to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you,
and persecute you;” Matthew 5:44 KJV
“Jesus
said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,
and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and
great commandment. And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love
thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law
and the prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40 KJV
“No
one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the
other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You
cannot serve both God and money.” Matthew 6:24 NIV
“Then
Jesus said to his disciples, "If any of you wants to be my
follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross,
and follow me.” Matthew 16:24 NLT
“If
someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a
liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can
he love God whom he has not seen?” 1 John 4:20 NKJV
“For
as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye
have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”
Romans
8:14-15 KJV
“Therefore,
if anyone [is] in Christ, [he is] a new creation; old things have
passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians
5:17 NKJV
