One of the pleasant jobs of being the chair of ISDDE is being involved with the annual prize giving. This year’s is for an individual product or project, with the over-riding criterion being recognition of excellence by a wide range of designers and users. The closing date for entries has now passed, but you will be able to hear last year’s winners, Kaye Stacey and Zalman Usiskin, tell us about their work at ISDDE 2018. We’re looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in beautiful Galway where we are assured of a warm Gaelic welcome. The Earlybird rate finishes at the end of February, so do register before then. Those of you who are ISDDE conference regulars will realise that the timing is very different this year – a northern hemisphere Spring rather than Autumn event. Do you have a view on which time of year is best for our community to meet? We’ll never please everyone, but if you have a strong opinion the exec. would like to hear from you.
There were lots of lovely strong opinions around who the next Executive Chair should be. I’m delighted to announce that my successor is Jacquey Barber. Whilst my background is in mathematics education, Jacquey brings a wealth of experience in science education. She is currently the Executive Director of The Learning Design Group at the Lawrence Hall of Science in California, which is a talented and award-winning team of curriculum innovators, including scientists, curriculum and assessment designers, professional developers, educational researchers, and disciplinary literacy specialists. Jacquey is shadowing my job currently and will take on the role next year. The exec. other than that stays largely the same, with Maarten Pieters replacing Angela Hall, and Lucy Rycroft-Smith being co-opted to the Communications group. Our thanks to Angela for many years’ service, and a welcome to Maarten and Lucy.
Other good news – ISDDE has been accepted as an ICMI Affiliated Organisation. ICMI, for those of you not familiar with the Maths ed. world, stands for the International Congress on Mathematical Education. (https://www.mathunion.org/icmi) Being accepted as part of this is an indication that ISDDE is recognised as contributing to mathematics education worldwide. Our next target will be to gain recognition in the science education community too…… all ideas welcome.
One of the comments on our ICMI application was that ISDDE should make an effort to enlarge the scope of participation so as to include much more representation from other parts of the world and especially from underdeveloped countries. We are aware that our membership is largely from UK, USA, Europe and Australia. We would be delighted if our current members and fellows would introduce ISDDE to designers from other areas of the globe. Could you put this on your to do list?
