The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has reported that a vessel was attacked approximately 97NM northwest of Hodeidah, Yemen.
On 15 July 2024 at 12:00UTC the Liberia-flagged Tanker CHIOS LION (IMO: 9398280) was struck on the Port side by an unmanned surface vessel (USV). Initial reports indicate that the Tanker sustained minor damage and the crew are safe. The Master of the CHIOS LION informed the UKMTO that there was some light smoke as a result of the impact.
This incident was part of a swarm of attacks by the Houthis on multiple vessels sailing in the vicinity of Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah on Monday.
The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) stated that while originally headed South, following the attack the [CHIOS LION] turned around and back North out of the threat area to further assess damage and investigate potential oil spillage. The vessel then proceeded to its next port of call.
All vessels in the area are advised to proceed with caution and to report any suspicious activities to the UKMTO.
