Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Triumphant
Entry into Jerusalem”
Aim: Study
the
immediate response of the crowds to Jesus’ arrival into Jerusalem;
Identify
reasons why people today seek and follow new leadership, and Accept
Jesus as a leader who offers hope for the world in every age.
Background:
Matthew 21:1-11
Bible Lesson:
Matthew
21:1-11
“Tell
ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and
sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.” Matthew 21:5
KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
The Jewish Passover is a sacred
celebration of an incredible and revered act of God in the
deliverance of God’s people from Egyptian bondage in dramatic
fashion. The Death Angel passed over the households of all who
faithfully placed the blood of a slain lamb on the doorpost of their
house. All other households mourned the death of their firstborn
from the least to even the household of Pharaoh. This 10th
act of God forced the Egyptian Pharaoh to release the Jewish slaves.
Our study describes the Triumphant Entrance of Jesus into the city
of Jerusalem during the celebration of Passover. All Jewish men were
commanded to come to Jerusalem for the Passover, so the city was
bustling and crowded with people for the celebration of the
Passover. Jesus’ entry in to Jerusalem is recorded not only in the
Gospel according Matthew, but also in Mark 11:1-10,
Luke 19:29-38, and
John 12:12-19. This
entry in to Jerusalem is now call Palm Sunday, which is the
beginning of Holy Week or the
Passion Week, which
leads
up to Jesus’ Crucifixion and His Glorious Resurrection!
-
Matthew
21:1-7, Presence of the Prophet: As
Jesus and his disciples journey to Jerusalem to celebrate the
Passover, they came
to the town of Bethphage almost 2 miles east of Jerusalem in the
Mount of Olives. Bethphage means “House of ripe figs.” At this
location Jesus directs two disciples to go
into a nearby village where they will find a donkey and its colt
tied and they are to untie them and to bring them to
Him. He further instructs
them that if they
encounter any objections, they are to say “The Lord needs them”
and they will be allowed take them. In other accounts of this event,
it is recorded that everything transpired just as Jesus described.
Jesus is placed on the colt which has never been mounted before,
after garments were placed upon it to serve as a “saddle.” This
event was prophesied hundreds of years earlier by the prophet
Zachariah (Zechariah 9:9). Customarily,
conquering Kings rode mighty stallions, but Jesus, the King of
Kings, rode on a humble beast of burden a donkey’s colt
representing humility and Jesus coming
to bring Peace!
-
Matthew
21:8-11, Processional of the People:
Jerusalem was teeming with
people who had journeyed there for the Passover. A number of these
people composed of the
multitude that welcomed
and accompanied Jesus as he
entered
the city. Many placed their garments and palm branches in the path
of the donkey that Jesus rode. This unusual natural carpet
acknowledged the entrance of royalty and provided a cushion to
the uneven roadway. The cry
from the multitude that proceeded Jesus entrance was “Hosanna to
the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord;
Hosanna in
the highest.” The word Hosanna is translated “Save now” or
“Save, we beseech Thee.” The title, “Son of David” alludes
to God’s promise to David that there would always be a ruler in
Israel of his bloodline. David’s natural descendants were not
able to keep God’s laws; therefore, God gave His own Son, Jesus,
as an adopted son to Joseph who was a descendant of David, which
provided fulfillment of the promise. “Blessed” means to speak
well of. The multitude joyously spoke well of Jesus who came not
only in
the name of the Lord, but as the Lord! Their request to “Save now”
was to fulfill the prophesy of the Messiah who they hoped would
decisively overthrow
the ruling Roman government. Jesus’
entrance caused
such an uproar in Jerusalem that some asked the question, “Who is
this?” We must remember that much of Jesus’ miraculous works
were not performed in Jerusalem but in other surrounding regions.
Those who knew Jesus answered “It’s Jesus, the prophet from
Nazareth in Galilee.” Jesus was truly THE PROPHET, but He was much
more. Prophets spoke truth to power, delivered God’s Word to the
people, performed miracles, and warned of coming trouble. Jesus did
all these things, but He is
the Second Person of the God Head who came
into the world to make known the Father and to reconcile humankind
with God with His Death on
the Cross for Our Sins!
Take
Aways:
-
Jesus came as a servant with
humility to make known Father God and to die in our place for our
sins. If He came with humility, why should we seek to be anyway
otherwise.
-
If the prophesy of Jesus
entering Jerusalem triumphantly was fulfilled, how much more should
we look forward to the fulfillment of the prophesy of His Return
with the dead in Christ and in the twinkling of an eye we too (if
we remain) shall be changed to occupy incorruptible bodies!
-
We must exuberantly give
praise unto the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Our Savior, Jesus
the Christ!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“I
will call upon the LORD, [who is worthy] to be praised: so shall I be
saved from mine enemies.” Psalms
18:3 KJV
“Pride
[goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
Proverbs
16:18 KJV
“A
man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble
in spirit.” Proverbs
29:23 KJV
“If
my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and
pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I
hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their
land.” 2 Chronicles
7:14 KJV
“Lift
up your heads, O ye gates; even lift [them] up, ye everlasting doors;
and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The
LORD of hosts, he [is] the King of glory. Selah.” Psalms
24:9-10 KJV
“For
this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive
[and] remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which
are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a
shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God:
and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive
[and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to
meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
1 Thessalonians
4:15-17 KJV
