The French Riviera runs from Cassis (although some suggest Toulon) to the Italian border, passing through famous cities such as Saint Tropez, Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Monaco and finally Menton. Since 1860, Côte d’Azur is what the French call this stretch of the azure coastline.
Seaside Cassis is known for its waterfront lined with restaurants, towering cliffs, and delicious white and rosé wines. Between Cassis and Marseille, the stunning bays – les Calanques – are accessible primarily by boat, or in some cases, by footpaths.
Please don’t tell the Parisians, but Marseille’s residents can swim at an urban beach, watch the sunset (pastis in hand) from a sheltered fishing bay, and finish the day with fresh bouillabaisse.
Head west from Marseille to the small fishing towns and sheltered coves of the Côte Bleue. This coast may be less known by tourists, and the locals want to keep it that way.
Whether you arrive in Marseille or Nice, enjoy the beautiful azure waters of the Mediterranean. We hope that these feature articles provide a quick escape to the coast.
