Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Nehemiah: The Captive Cupbearer Rebuilds a Nation”
Aim: Examine why Nehemiah decided to restore the wall of Jerusalem and reform/revive the Sabbath law, Appreciate Nehemiah’s feelings and behavior in restoring the wall and reforming Jewish worship, and Identify ways to restore worn parts of the faith community and revive traditions that honor God.
Background: Nehemiah 2:11-20; 13:1-22
Bible Lesson: Nehemiah 2:11-20
Memory Verses:
“Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we [are] in, how Jerusalem [lieth] waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.” Nehemiah 2:17 KJV
Some Highlights:
- The name Nehemiah means “The Lord comforts.” Nehemiah was a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes. This was a position of prominence and one which required great trust for he was responsibility for filling and handling the cup for the king. The king’s life was in a way in the hands of the cupbearer. Nehemiah was a native of Judah.
- Nehemiah Chapter 1 opens with one of Nehemiah’s brothers returning from Judah. He reported to Nehemiah that the survivor exiles were in trouble for the walls of Jerusalem had been broken down and its gates had been burned. This bad news affected Nehemiah deeply and caused him to weep. He mourned and fasted many days concerning this situation. Nehemiah prayed acknowledging his sins along with those of the Jewish people and requested that he might find favor with the King. This situation occurred in the twentieth year of the king’s reign. Nehemiah brought the king a cup of wine and the King noted Nehemiah’s sadness. Nehemiah explained that his sadness was because of the disrepair of the wall and gates of Jerusalem, the city of his ancestry. Because of Nehemiah’s relationship with the king, King Artaxerxes inquired as to how he could help. Nehemiah requested that he be sent to Judah to rebuild the wall. King Artaxerxes grants his requests and additionally provides him two letters, one to allow him safe passage in the region and the second to direct the keepers of the king’s forrest to provide timber for the rebuilding project. Nehemiah was also accompanied by a military escort of soldiers on his journey.
- Our Study opens three days after Nehemiah arrives in Jerusalem. He selects a few men to accompany him on a late night inspection of the wall and its gates. He did not disclose his mission to repair the wall to anyone in Jerusalem, not even the priest, nobles, or officials. It is not clear whether his inspection took only one night or several, but his observations were that the situation was serious and would require a great deal of effort to repair the wall and its gates.
- At the appointed time, Nehemiah assembled the priest, nobles, officials, and the other Jewish people and pointed out to them they, including himself, were in trouble with the wall broken down and its gates burned. The wall and city gates constituted a defense against enemies and their defense was down. Nehemiah further shared with them that the Hand of God was upon him and that he had the support of King Artaxerxes to repair the wall and the gates. The people’s response to Nehemiah’s stirring call to action was “Let us start rebuilding.” The work to rebuild began in earnest.
- Not long after the rebuilding began, Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem, who were from nearby neighboring countries began to mock and ridicule the Jewish people because of the rebuilding project. It is thought that this opposition was brought about because of political and financial interest disruptions. Not knowing that the king had sanctioned the project, they even accused the project as being a rebellion against King Artaxerxes. Nehemiah responded to this opposition by disclosing to them that the God of Heaven will give them success in their project and that the distractors had on business in these matters of Jerusalem.
- Despite the opposition, distractors, and other obstacles, the people had a mind to work and with God’s Help and the determination of the people the project was completed in a mere 52 days. Not included in our passage under consideration is Nehemiah’s involvement and influence in a spiritual reformation including restoring the observation of the Sabbath Day reverence and other aspects of God’s Law.
Take Aways:
- Nehemiah went to God in prayer before dealing with his concerns for the torn down walls and burned gates of Jerusalem. We need to do likewise and seek God’s guidance and direction as we go about our daily lives and as well as when addressing major issues in our lives.
- With God’s Help there is no obstacle too great to overcome in achieving a God Sanctioned Effort.
- Do not let distractors or discouragers stop your efforts in the pursuit of God's Sanctioned Work.
- From time to time, we need to take an inventory of our lives and ask God to restore those areas of our lives that are broken or do not meet God’s Approval.
Bible Verses to Keep in Mind:
“God [is] faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:9 KJV
“Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he [is] God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;” Deuteronomy 7:9 KJV
“Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. What shall we then say to these things? If God [be] for us, who [can be] against us?” Romans 8:30-31 KJV
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform [it] until the day of Jesus Christ:” Philippians 1:6 KJV
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Galatians 6:9 KJV
“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” 1 Corinthians 4:2 KJV

Tennessee State University (TSU) and Meharry Medical College, two historically Black academic institutions in Nashville, today announced a new partnership focused on establishing a pipeline of African-American doctors and dentists who will provide essential care to underserved communities. The historic agreement will recruit, select and support the medical education of a cadre of African American students who are interested in becoming physicians or dentists. The overriding goal is to increase the number of African American trained health care providers who will stay and work in minority communities that have the greatest burden of health care needs. The accelerated program seeks to reduce the amount of time it takes students to enter medical school. The traditional four-year Bachelor of Science degree will become a three-year program—students will spend three years pre-med at TSU before going on to study medicine or dentistry at Meharry. The result is total completion in seven years, instead of the customary eight years. Students participating in the pathways program will be those with the highest academic preparation and quality. Requirements for admission will be based on a 3.5 grade point average, a score of 1300 on the SAT (two components) or a 29 on the ACT. Mentoring, tutoring and coaching will be crosscutting elements of the program, as will be career and professional guidance for all students involved. 599 New COVID-19 Cases & 13 Deaths Reported in Kentucky for
April 17, 2021
(38 New Cases in Fayette County)
As millions receive the COVID-19 vaccines, it is still important and necessary to continue to practice the CDC and Kentucky Governor's Guidance and Mandates. The distribution and administration of the vaccines to millions of people continues as a high priority for the Biden Administration with July 4th as a milestone objective for families whose members have been fully vaccinated to have small celebration gatherings. Meanwhile we must stay steadfast, vigilant and disciplined in the adherence of safe practices as provided by the CDC and the Kentucky Governor's Health advice in light of the continued spread of the virus. Click CDC VACCINE INFORMATION for some information from the CDC on the COVID-19 vaccines.
- Get a flu vaccination as soon as possible but getting it any time in the flu season is beneficial. VaccineFinderexternal icon to find out where to get vaccinated near you.
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick, maintain at least 6 feet from others who are not from your household,
- Wear face masks when in public (Mandatory in Kentucky and is being extended on a 30 day basis until the spread is under control),
- Wash your hands frequently,
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and leave home only when absolutely necessary.
