A Climate for Change

Climate change is increasingly hitting the headlines, but so is action to combat it.

Lest we forget.......

The weather station at Weston Park in Sheffield recorded a record 39.4 degrees Celsius on 19th July this year, smashing the previous record (only made in 2019!) by a staggering 3.8 degrees. Read more about the UK's record weather here.

What do your students need to talk about?

Our next conference will provide the opportunity for students in South Yorkshire to talk to one another about climate issues.

What are the climate-related issues that are most pressing to them? Heating homes sustainably? Sustainable food or fashion? Anxiety about the climate? How to improve school grounds? Or other topics?

Please forward their thoughts to schools@scesy.org.uk, so we can plan sessions to address these topics.

National Schools Climate Assembly

The national Schools Climate Assembly took place at King Edward VII school on 20th October. 1500 students from Sheffield and around the country heard from speakers and took part in debates around the Climate Emergency. The keynote address was given by Chris Packham. Other speakers included climate activist MIchaela Loach and eighteen year old Scarlett Westbrook, who has written content for several political party manifestos. The event was featured on both Look North and ITV Calendar. Click here to watch.

As a result of this conference, a delegation of students and staff will be heading to 10 Downing Street with a petition signed by over 1000 students!

Schools' Climate Education South Yorkshire Wins Award!

We're pleased to announce that Schools Climate Education South Yorkshire won 'Education Initiative of the Year' at the South Yorkshire Sustainability Awards on 22nd September. See the article in the Sheffield Star here.

Enfield schools use our video!

BA students from Middlesex University filmed students in schools in Enfield watching our 'Our Time' video. They used this to catalyse climate action.

The films promote their 'Love Your Planet' competition. The secondary one is here and their primary film is here.

CPD 3rd November: The 4 Cs: Curriculum

The Learn Sheffield Climate Emergency Education programme continues.

How confident do you feel about teaching about climate change?

A survey is being conducted by the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education (CCCSE) at University College London to find out how confident, prepared and supported teachers feel to incorporate climate change and sustainability into their teaching, and to investigate teachers' related professional development experiences and needs.

They are inviting responses from teachers working across all Key Stages and all subject areas, including teachers who do not currently engage with climate change and sustainability through their teaching, as well as those who do.
