WEEKEND RECIPE | PERFECT PASTA
Recipe by Melissa Blease |
Crab Courgetti Spaghetti |
This simple, elegant pasta dish puts the intrinsically salty/sweet, slightly nutty flavour of both creamy white and rich brown crab in the spotlight, turning the dish into the prandial version, if you like, of an oceanic breeze wafting in on a tide of sumptuous courgetti spaghetti, enlivened by the gentle thrum of chilli heat and an uplifting citrus blast.
Combining the spiralized courgettes with the pasta not only cuts down on carbs, but brings a light, fresh touch to a dish that perfectly bridges the gap between salad days and the impending season of mellow fruitfulness. If you haven't got a spiralizer, most supermarkets sell packets of fresh courgettes already spiralized for you.
If you can't get hold of (or simply don't like!) crab, add around 150g fresh, raw king prawns with the sliced shallot at the start of the recipe instead.
Ingredients (serves 2-3) |
100g dried spaghetti 5-6 tbsp olive oil 1 large shallot, peeled and thinly sliced 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely sliced 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 2-3 courgettes (you need around 500g in total) 100g white and brown crab, fresh or tinned The juice of ½ lemon Freshly chopped dill, freshly chopped parsley
Method |
1. Cook the spaghetti in boiling salted water according to the packet instructions. Drain well and set to one side.
2. Gently heat around 3 tablespoons of the oil in a large frying pan. Add the sliced shallot and sauté for around 3 minutes until the shallot is just turning translucent. Add the chilli and garlic and continue to sauté for around a minute, taking care not to allow the garlic to brown.
3. Add the spiralized courgettes to the pan and fry for a further 2 minutes – any more, and the courgettes will release too much water.
4. Add the crab, cooked spaghetti, lemon juice and dill to the pan. Drizzle with another 1-2 tbsp olive oil into the pan, season well with plenty of salt and lots of black pepper and toss everything together using tongs. Serve immediately in warm bowls, scattered with more freshly chopped dill and a smattering of freshly chopped parsley.

Curated by Daniel McCabe
A few years ago the creative art, design and craft magazine UPPERCASE devised a series of standalone 'inspirational' titles to complement and provide more depth to areas it's covered so far in 50-odd issues (such as florals, quilting, ceramics, printmaking etc.). The super-lush and absurdly idea-packed The Uppercase Encyclopedia of Inspiration series hits ten issues with the release of 'Art Supplies'. This vast tome examines the provenance, lore and enduring appeal of art-making tools and supplies, explored via profiles of artists, artisans, collectors and venerable manufacturers. These titles have proved so popular that all the initial releases have been reprinted so if you're lacking creative inspiration right now, well, here you go | £35

Tree-inspired immersive art installation takes root in Broadmead
Overstory, a free-to-attend summer art installation from leading contemporary artists Ivan Morison and Heather Peak has taken root in Broadmead – brought to the city by The Natural History Consortium, the charity behind the city's Festival of Nature.
The artists were inspired by native trees across Bristol, and their artwork will encourage interest and discussion around the importance of trees in our lives, as well as highlight the necessity of tree canopy coverage across the city. Overstory also aligns with Bristol's plan to scale up tree planting in the city by 2050, for the benefit of both people and wildlife.
Free for all to view. For more information, follow social media updates on @festofnature and #Overstory.

Plea for volunteers to support Bristol Memory Walk
57-year-old volunteer, Anita Wagstaffe, is urging supporters to go the extra mile for Alzheimer’s Society by volunteering to help at the charity’s Bristol Memory Walk on Saturday 3 September 2022.
Hundreds have already registered to walk – with more joining by the moment – and Alzheimer’s Society is looking to add to the number of helpers.
Anita, who lives in Exeter, will be travelling more than 60 miles to help on the day following her mum’s diagnosis of mixed dementia in September last year. Anita said: “Following mum’s diagnosis, the memory clinic said they could put me in touch with Alzheimer’s Society.
“When one of their Dementia Advisers rang, he asked me how I was. It was probably the first time someone had asked me. I remember thinking how nice it was to have a phone call from someone who understood what we were going through. Just for him to ask how I was – it was like ‘oh my goodness’. It was just what was needed at that time; it was lovely.”
Supporters can also opt to walk on their own, or with loved ones, on the paths, pavements, parks or pebbles in a location of their choosing throughout September. Memory Walk events have been a regular fixture in the Autumn calendar for over 10 years, seeing half a million walkers raise over £41 million for Alzheimer’s Society.
Visit memorywalk.org.uk to find out more about organising your own Memory Walk or taking part in Alzheimer’s Society’s organised events this Autumn.
