Photo: The once bustling Liberty Avenue in Queens, New York, is at a standstill, as Covid-19 takes its toll.

It was a bad time to die. Empty streets. Closed storefronts. Spotlessly clean subways. Zoom classrooms.  Virtual funerals.  Flatten the curve. The city that never sleeps is a wasteland. Liberty Avenue looks like a ghost town. And yes the deaths. Your mom complains of breathing problems. A compromised immune system leads to the hospital. It’s a world of masks and ventilators.

You leave with a heavy heart and then the unthinkable happens. A nurse has mom on Skype. The patient mumbles a few words; there is a wave of the hand and a final goodbye. You want to give mom a proper send-off, with the relatives and priest present. But you can’t. The coffin is sealed. You are not allowed near it. You don’t know where they are taking mom, but they promise to send the ashes. This is the new normal.      Continue reading →

Guyana Politics: PPP rules out returning to Parliament to approve cash for govt; says state of emergency impossible

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) on Sunday ruled out returning to Parliament to  approve funds for government spending if the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) invalidates the March  2, 2020 general and regional elections.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) wishes to make it abundantly clear that it will never return to Parliament or support the convening of Parliament unless the true results of the 2nd March 2020 elections, as recently recounted, is lawfully declared by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM),” the PPP said in a statement.      Continue reading →

The team comprises (from left to right) Sylvester King, Deputy Supervisor of Elections of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Cynthia Barrow-Giles, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and John Jarvis, Commissioner of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission. Despite the current political impasse in Guyana, former Prime Minister (PM)of Barbados Owen Arthur believes the nation‘s hope for a non- partisan political future lies in the hands of the younger generation.

“The young people in these minor parties had a view that is so refreshing that I believe that Guyana is going to get away from this hardened partisan politics. I believe some of those young people may be able to move away from the tribalism and form alliances that will allow them to build a better Guyana.

COVID-19: Stranded Guyanese under financial strain while awaiting flight home from NY

– three repatriation flights cancelled

As she awaits an opportunity to return home, one Guyanse woman has been sleeping at a train station in the United States because she has no money to pay for proper accommodations. She is among the many Guyanese who are feeling the financial strain of being stranded in New York as a result of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and are desperate to return home. “So the Guyanese are really suffering,” Bibi Hussain, who is also seeking to return home, told Sunday Stabroek yesterday and related the predicament of the woman sleeping at the train station.            Continue reading →
