You know that feeling you have when someone at work is absolutely π₯ on it π₯ at all times? That person who - when youβre on a project with them - you know itβs going to be good.
This is called a personal brand. π It's how others see us, and a strong personal brand can help us stand out in the job market and build a successful career. Itβs a combination of our skills, experience, reputation, and values that sets us apart from others. π
By actively developing our personal brand, we can increase our visibility and credibility, and open up new opportunities and good stuff in the future.
To build our personal brand at work, the main thing is knowing what we are good and bad at. Focusing on those things we do really well, and building on the things we donβt. Authenticity is also essential when building our personal brand. We should be true to ourselves and let our unique qualities shine through.
Now - letβs talk networking. Networking can sound like a bit of a drag but we are networking all of the time. Everyone at work that you speak to is part of your network - every interaction you have affects how strong that link is between you and them. By building relationships with coworkers, mentors, and industry leaders, we can expand our reach and gain new insights and opportunities. This in turn helps us grow our personal brand.
Finally, we need to embrace feedback. Ask for feedback all the time from every person that will give it to you. Chances are, the things you think you are okay at, you are probably great at. And the things you might think you have nailedβ¦ you get the point. Asking for feedback from coworkers and mentors and using it to refine our personal brand can help us stay on top of our game and continuously improve. π
Everything we do affects our personal brand to some effect. The key is to make sure that we are always consciously building it - so we can reap the rewards later on.
Quick checklist for building our personal brand at work:
π Look at others with a good reputation. What can I learn from them?
π¨ What am I good at and should double down on? What areas need development?
π What makes me unique? How can I make that stand out?
π¬ Network - which relationships should I actively develop? What can I do for them?
βοΈ Can I share my knowledge (content, presentations, talks)?
π Ask for feedback! Ask again!
