AFL Congratulates Menachem Zivotofsky and Applauds Ambassador David Friedman and the US State Department for Issuing the First US Passport to an American Citizen Born in Jerusalem with “Israel” Designated as the Place of Birth.

New York, NY

Just weeks after Menachem Zivotofsky was born eighteen years ago, his parents decided to take advantage of a new law in the United States that allowed American citizens born in Jerusalem to designate their place of birth on their passport as Jerusalem, Israel, rather than just Jerusalem. That action by Ari and Naomi Zivotofsky touched off litigation that lasted more than a dozen years and included two decisions by the United States Supreme Court.

Menachem and his parents finally achieved their victory last week when the U.S. State Department made Menachem the first person to receive a U.S. passport designating his birthplace as Jerusalem, Israel, in a ceremony attended by U.S. Ambassador David Friedman. This momentous event serves to further vindicate recognition of Jerusalem as the eternal capital of the Jewish State of Israel.

AFL congratulates and salutes Menachem, his family, and all those who fought for this outcome for nearly two decades, including Nathan and Alyza Lewin who represented the Zivotofskys throughout the long process. AFL Board member Sarah Biser and Robert Kravitz filed an amicus brief in the United States Supreme Court, on behalf of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists, in support of Zivotofsky.
