Happy July, my friends!

Now that we kind of know how school is rolling out in the fall, we may be able to settle down (in this new normal) and enjoy the rest of summer. This weekend we are heading onto the lake. I know – little things are seeming like such an adventure these days. <snort> We no longer maintain a boat, having owned one for most of our married lives—but are renting a large pontoon! It will be fun to cruise the lake all day. With the choppy wake on this lake, I will not be skiing—only enjoying!

Shep loves water, especially our pool, the hose, or a sprinkler—but not so much the lake. I think the lake looks overwhelming for the little guy. He plays ball and stays entertained the entire time around the pool. If we end up taking them on the boat (I hope) I’ll take pictures and share them next month.

Our little rascal, Gracie, has gained four pounds and has given us hundreds of laughs watching her play, which is nonstop. We are the fourth home (her fur-ever home) she has had in her short seven-month life. Gracie rushes her meals, eating like she won’t get a chance to finish. We use one of those bowls that are divided to keep her from wolfing down her food; however, so far it has not made much impact. She clears her dish in less than a minute. I’ve timed it.

Gracie and Shep seem to have adjusted to each other-or are making great strides in the right direction. I never thought to see my sweet pup, Shep, allow another animal on the bed. Total shocker! He is always possessive of me and rarely lets other dogs close. But here we are!

My latest work in progress, Lyon’s Prey, winging its way to the editor. It’s part of The Lyon’s Den Connected World Series under DragonBlade. Look for it on Pre-Order for $.99 in August. It will also be free on Kindle Unlimited.

Here is a short blurb:

Enter the world of the most notorious gambling den in London where matches are made...usually. Welcome to the world of The Lyon’s Den: The Black Widow of Whitehall Connected World, where the underground of Regency London thrives...and loves.

Haunted by his wife’s death, he vowed to never marry again...until he meets her!

Evan Prescott, the fifth Earl of Clarendon lost his wife during the birth of their child. Broken, Evan seeks solace in the Lyon’s Den, a world of drink, cards, and excess—where wins and losses are easier to navigate than responsibilities. Overconfident and in his cups, he makes a bet that will change his life.

Still mourning the loss of her father and elder brother…

Lady Charlotte Grisham saves her young brother from the path of a speeding carriage. In a fit of pique, she throws propriety to the wind and storms up the steps of the owner’s London townhouse—and meets the man that upends her world.

The stars align when his high stakes bet and her lapse in judgement give the Black Widow of Whitehall the perfect opportunity to spin her web of hearts, while untold danger lurks a step behind.

Can a marriage of convenience give rise to love in time to avoid deadly disaster?

TIDBITS of Historical stuff

In the Lyon’s Prey, part of my research centered around the concept of guardianship during the Regency era. In the ton, it was rare that a child would be able to stay solely under the guardianship of the widowed mother, which I found a little distressing. There was nearly always a male at least 21 years old named as guardian. Things became difficult when parents died without guardians named for the remaining children.

Normally, if the child’s father or male guardian died, the minor children (especially female children) were placed into a joint guardianship. Normally this would be the mother of the child (or an adult female family member if there was no surviving mother), and a named male. This could be a brother, cousin, business associate, friend, etc. He did not always have to be a member of the child’s family.

The male in the guardianship would normally maintain control over money matters and estate business. Money settled on a minor child could only be handled by the guardian. If a female child was involved, her mother normally had control over things like social events, clothing and daily comings and goings within the household. Girls over fourteen years old could request a specific guardian, although my research indicated that this was not well-known and rarely took place. Most young females normally remained under the guardianship of the appointed male.

Appointments for guardianship were made through application to the court in Chancery. Curiously, within the peerage, a peer had the right to guardianship over his heir apparent or heir presumptive, if no other guardian is named. However, without similar status, this rule did not apply to his siblings.

Guardians had absolute control over finances and money was not always handled as intended. It was possible for a ward to sue their guardians if they discovered upon reaching majority (21 years) that the guardian squandered away the money. Here’s a bit of good news—often the ward won the suit.
