Dear friends,
“Write what you know,” teachers typically advise. But in a long career as a journalist and author, my greatest satisfaction has come from writing what I love. My passion for Italy, its language, and its culture inspired three books and hundreds of blog posts. Then COVID put the world on lockdown.
Sheltering in Bodega Bay, I began exploring the stark, stunning coast just beyond our door. Soon I was immersed in a fascinating new world. I sailed to the edge of the continental shelf, hiked to secret waterfalls, trailed otters in coastal dunes, monitored nesting seabirds, plunged into tide pools, earned certification as a California naturalist, and became a docent and research volunteer at the University of California, Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory and Reserve.
