Hey there ,
I mentioned a couple weeks back the '70s had lots of weird stuff. Among those weird phenomena was a strange method of communication that DIDN'T involve downloading aps, namely CB radios.

First, a history.

Shortly after the invention of radio came a series of bulky, expensive corporate-driven methods of getting voice sounds and words to people to hear. It was worth setting aside time for as you sat by the fire.

Cars changed all that, because they came about at a time when radio too was getting more portable, and less substantial. So long as it churned something out in the background to your fabulous day out in your ride you were happy.

Of course, there wasn't much in the way of direct connection to other motorists, the sound went only one way -to you. But then came a different kind of radio, a fad that blossomed in the 1970s: Citizen Band Radio.

Not only was there the freedom of being on the open road and a ready-made audience to hear your pontificating, news gathering and other gossip there was a particular 'lingo' borrowed from C.B.'s inception: the trucking industry. All sorts of messages and questions could be shortly addressed/answered in the CB 'code' like your location ("what's your 10-20?") or warning you about state troopers (Smokey Bears, or smokeys).

You might think what's the difference between this stuff and cell phones? Well, CB radio broadcasts were public, which meant you had to have a kind of persona (handle) -a name you went by. The 1970s were the perfect era to usher in this 'do your own thing' and 'go your own way' lifestyle...

... to keep on trucking!

A reminder:

Head back to an era just before Mayfield Eight with The Rat Hole Bastards, the saga of the inception of the notorious biker gang a few years before they run afoul of Calvin Ryder that fateful summer day in 1974...
