Japanese colour woodblock prints of the Edo period (1603–1868) promoted everything from tooth powder to textile design and much in between. This talk explores the famous regional foods (meibutsu) and restaurants (meisho) that were popularised through such works. With speaker Christine M.E. Guth, who has taught at institutions including Princeton, Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, and Berkeley, and led the Asian specialism in the Victoria and Albert Museum & Royal College of Art’s Post-graduate History of Design Program from 2007 until 2016.

In this event, three storytellers from Myanmar will share their stories to help you understand what people are experiencing following the coup in February, and have been experiencing under the reign of the violent military since the inception of the country.
Not only will you get a chance to hear their stories you will also watch two different musical performances. At the beginning of each story, the storyteller will pose a question to the audience, which you will get to discuss in small groups with other event participants.

The KL theatre group Shakespeare Demystified used to come to Penang every year to present its shorter, and simplified versions of Shakespeare’s classic plays, to the delight of children and adults alike. This online (Zoom) presentation will be live, with the actors performing in real time--although in different venues--while the audience is watching. As always the show will be interactive, with the audience able to discuss and comment on what they see. Canonical scenes and speeches from the play in the original text, will be knitted together by narration in contemporary English. Tickets RM 30.
