The IAM COMPACT project, funded by the European Union’s Research and Innovation HORIZON EUROPE programme aims to support the assessment of global climate goals, progress, and feasibility space and to enable the design of the next round of effective and robust Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and policy planning beyond 2030 for the EU, major emitters, and non-high-income countries.

The project’s work structure can be broken down into five highly intertwined components of activities, moving from Listening to Exchanging, onto Modelling & Expanding, and finally Explaining!

In doing so, IAM COMPACT puts forward a unique interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach to promote the science-policy and science-society dialogue, throughout the research process, in a two-way exchange approach. This revolves around a key novelty in the form of a Policy Response Mechanism (PRM), which directly engages a wide range of stakeholders from different disciplines and geographic scales, at each step of the modelling process, from guiding policy-relevant research questions to co-designing and evaluating preliminary findings, and co-producing contributions. In doing so, the project will enhance the policy relevance and societal impact as well as the ownership of the research outcomes.

Our kick-off meeting was held in Glyfada, Greece on the 8th and the 9th of September 2022! Representatives from all 22 research partners participated in the meeting and highlighted the expertise of their institution as well as their contribution to the project’s activities.

On the first day, the IAM COMPACT coordinator demonstrated the project’s overview and vision, while representatives of the consortium presented their institute and team, their work experience and role in the project, as well as their expectations from the project's implementation. Work package leaders then had the opportunity to present their tasks and timelines for the first months of the project.

On the second day of the meeting, each work package leader also had the opportunity to outline their perceived challenges and opportunities, by discussing what they are most excited and/or concerned about in the project; discussions on tasks and deliverables of the first year were also held among partners. Finally, the Project Advisor from the European Commission’s side provided guidance on Horizon Europe project implementation as well as encouraged the consortium to deliver on its expected results, acknowledging the high ambition of IAM COMPACT, with the aim to have great impact on the support of Paris Agreement by contributing to the EU's and other countries' efforts in the development of their post-2030 climate efforts.

IAM COMPACT has issued its first policy publication, aiming to provide stakeholders with an overview of the envisaged modelling process of the IAM COMPACT project and explain the stakeholder engagement strategy that will form a core part of this process. The strategy revolves around a policy response mechanism to facilitate constructive dialogue and knowledge sharing between stakeholders and scientists with the aim of generating policy-relevant insights.

Communication and exploitation lie at the core of the IAM COMPACT project, in the form of its policy response mechanism and co-creative work structure, seeking to engage with stakeholders to guide policy-relevant research questions and evaluate outcomes. Going beyond stakeholders active in the project processes, a comprehensive communication, dissemination, and exploitation (CDE) plan is developed and followed, aiming to reach an even broader audience.

A clear and distinctive visual identity is the starting point of any activity aiming to communicate the project, disseminate its results, and maximise the exploitation of its findings.

This includes a flyer (link) to create visibility for partner countries, in both English and in sixteen languages of the consortium; a leaflet on the project objectives, methods, and expected results (link), again in English and all languages of the consortium; a poster to use as promotional material in physical/online events organised by the consortium or by relevant organisations (link); a targeted roll-up banner for policy events (link); as well as a presentation with basic information on the project, as template to be regularly updated and adapted to the right audience (link).
