Vol. 10, September 2021

We are excited that fall study abroad is once again underway! HUG, HUF, HUE and HIZ are all taking place this fall. From reintroducing Iceland to the HUE itinerary to combining HUG and HIZ, this fall has been full of many pleasant surprises, and more await in the coming months. Continue reading to find a summary of each program's activities from the month of September.

HUE

Not only is Harding University in England (HUE) the largest fall study abroad group this semester, but it was also the first program to kick off the fall 2021 study abroad semester back on August 26. The first 11 days of the semester were spent touring Iceland, a favorite location of many previous HUE students. After Iceland, the group made their way to their new home in London and have quickly taken advantage of many of the treasures that London has to offer, such as touring the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, riding the London Eye and watching Romeo & Juliet at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. HUE has also taken a number of excursions outside of London to places like Oxford, Bath and Stonehenge. Some students even chose to tour the Harry Potter film studios nearby.

HUF

The Harding University in Florence (HUF) fall group arrived in Italy on Thursday, September 16. Since their arrival, the group has spent time exploring the many churches, piazzas, markets, gelato shops and more of Florence. They've also taken part in many unique activities that might be new for some students, from a citywide scavenger hunt and painting class with HUF director Robbie Shackelford to horseback riding and even archery lessons. Many more adventures await our HUF students this semester!

HUG & HIZ

Due to COVID travel restrictions, the Harding in Zambia (HIZ) group is spending some of its semester with the Harding University in Greece (HUG) group. On September 9th, both groups departed the U.S. for Greece, where they spent three weeks exploring Athens, the sites of Northern Greece such as Philippi, Thessaloniki, Meteora, Delphi and more, as well as the sites of the Peloponnese region, including Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia and more. On September 29th, the groups parted ways for a brief bit. HUG students set out on a few days of independent travel while the HIZ group headed to Zambia. After a month in Zambia, the HIZ group will meet back up with the HUG group in Egypt for a tour and then return with the HUG group to Greece to end the semester. More on that in upcoming newsletters.

Banner Year for Study Abroad Applications!

The 2020-2021 school year saw more students submit applications to study abroad with us than any other year in the past seven years. We took in 475 applications from the first day of school in August 2020 through the last day of the summer in August 2021. For context, the second most number of applications we took in during this timeframe in the last seven years was 437.  We are thrilled that so many students are planning to study abroad with us and hope even more will join them!
