Explore page, comments, revamped navigation, and more
It's been just over a month since Updately first launched. While many of those who first joined have since stopped writing daily updates, a handful of you have stuck around, and seeing your updates in my feed every day is extremely inspiring to me. It's thriling to see something I've built be a valuable and enjoyable part of others' daily lives. 🥰
As it's only a side project of mine, I can't promise any roadmaps or growth trajectories for Updately, but I can tell you that I believe the vision behind it is pretty special, and I'll continue taking feedback and building it with love. I'm glad that you are here with me on this journey, and benefitting from my work along the way.
So, without further ado, let's get into the exciting new features in the v0.3.0 release of Updately!
Comments on update pages
This is the new feature I'm most excited about: you can now add comments directly on update pages!
Comments on Updately are a big step in the exciting direction of Updately being a full social platform, with a unique and powerful angle. Daily updates are unique portals into a person's lives and thoughts: recording them for yourself is useful, but they're downright magical when shared with others.
This is the thought that drove Updately's creation. Just in the past month, Updately has sparked dozens of meaningful conversations and connections for me. With native comments, the friction of building these serendipitous connections is even further reduced. I'm excited to see what new conversations will transpire! 🤩
The new explore page is another social-oriented feature that several people have asked for. On the page, you can see the updates of all Updately users rather than just the ones you follow, and search for specific users as before.
The functionality of this page is very basic right now, but there are many directions it could go in the future: recommended users to follow, groups of users to join, etc.
Updately's navigation has never been very complex, but now it's much clearer to use, and prettier. Your profile and feed are now always just a click away.
Revamped following/followers interfaces
Another set of small changes: both followers and followed users are visible from user profiles now. A full list can be brought up, too, making it easy to find and follow the people you want to.
Lots of hidden improvements
Lots of technical refactors and improvements came along with these changes, too. You probably won't notice them, but they're continually building the foundation for new and more robust features. If you're curious, all of Updately's code is open source, so go take a look!
That's all for now
There are tons more ideas floating around my head for potential new features or improvements to existing ones. Notifications, email notifications, user bios, private and semi-private accounts...
If you've read this far, though, I'd love to get to know your thoughts on Updately! If you're actively using it, how are you liking it? What's the biggest benefit you've gotten from it, and what are your biggest frustrations with it? If you aren't using Updately, are there any specific reasons? Are you using another app for daily updates? I'd love for you to reply to this email and let me know!
In closing, once again, thanks for using Updately and sticking with me. I hope you enjoy the new features, and I'm excited to see where Updately goes next!
