May is a delightful time of year in Provence; the temperatures are beginning to warm up, but it's not too hot. The days are longer, so there is more time to explore the charming villages, historic sites, and scenic countryside. While the lavender does not bloom in May, you may see red poppy fields and bright yellow broom depending on the spring temps. In Virginie's recent article, you can read more about May (holidays, history, and highlights).
In 2024, in addition to the usual public holidays in May, there is plenty of excitement in the region this year with the arrival of the Olympic Flame on May 8th into Marseille's Vieux Port. From Marseille, torchbearers will carry the precious Flame to Paris in time for the opening ceremonies on July 26th.
This year also marks several historical milestones in the region. Keith highlights the 50th anniversary of author and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol's passing, and the Cavaillon synagogue celebrates 250 years since its construction.
If you have yet to try Stephanie Villegas's spring menu, it's still possible. She combines some of the season's best flavours in a 3-course menu. Enjoy the taste of Provence this spring.
