2019 Review

A great year for Pocklington Tennis Club

2019 has been a busy year for Pocklington Tennis Club and has seen us grow, both in terms of our membership and also our facilities. We are continually striving to see development both on-court and off, and 2019 has been a success on all fronts.

Award-winning

Last Monday saw the Club being awarded the prestigious title of Yorkshire Tennis Club of the Year.

Chris French at the Yorkshire Tennis Awards 2019

This is a fantastic acknowledgement from Yorkshire Tennis of the progress the Club has made and all of the hard work that so many put into it.

This has been principally led by our Chairman, Chris French, who was also recognised at the awards, being Highly Commended in the Volunteer of the Year category.

Floodlights & Rejuvenation

The floodlight project was completed at the end of 2018, so this year has marked their first year of use. No doubt everyone who has played under them will have been impressed.

The introduction of the gated entry system and on-line booking has seen a number of non-members pay to play on our courts, making the Club an even greater asset to the local community.

To finish off the year, and to get us on the right footing moving into 2020, we are in the process of rejuvenating all 6 courts which will improve their playability and their lifespan.

League Teams

Our league teams generally performed well, with a lot of successes and some fantastic tennis too. Whilst it is principally about enjoyment, it was great to see a number of our teams promoted and looking forward to new challenges in 2020.

Thanks must go to the team captains who put in a lot of work to make sure we can continue to enter so many competitive teams in both the Driffield and York leagues.

Coaching

Once again, our Head Coach, Sean Evans, has developed the coaching programme further and welcomed more people onto our courts.

13 different junior groups have been taking place each week - more than we’ve ever had before. Sessions have been very well attended, and players have worked extremely hard whilst having lots of fun at the same time. Our Tennis & Multi-Sports Camps have also grown in reputation, with 2019 seeing the highest attendance we’ve ever had. As a result, we will be looking to put on more camps in 2020.

Adult Coaching

Our adult programme has been running throughout the year alongside our junior programme, with cardio tennis, doubles drills & Rusty Racquets/Beginners taking place throughout the week. Our Rusty Racquets/Beginners Sessions session has seen a few of our junior players’ parents come along and give it a go - and they are now regulars at the session after enjoying it so much.

So if you’re thinking of something for the new year - why not come and give it a go?  We have Cardio tennis & Rusty Racquets/Beginners sessions which are designed for new players to the game. No block booking needed, just come along, pay and play.

Juniors

Our junior programme has thrived in 2019. With so many opportunities to learn, develop and play, our juniors are rapidly improving, and our yellow ball players will soon be knocking on the door to support our adult league teams.

With coaching, camps, tournaments and club nights , our juniors programme is something to be very proud of;  most importantly, our juniors are really enjoying their tennis.

Our Driffield League teams finished in 1st and 2nd places  this year.

Sponsors

As always, success can only come when you have good support and at Pocklington Tennis Club we have brilliant backing from a number of sponsors. Thank you to all of those companies who have got behind us – you are very much a part of the success we have had this year!

A new range of club clothing has been launched this year – and has proved extremely popular.

2020 (and beyond)

Whilst 2020 may not see some of the more major developments that 2019 has, it is still another important year. Work continues behind the scenes regarding plans to cover courts 5 and 6 and of course we will be looking to increase membership and participation.

As the club continues to grow, more help is needed to further the opportunities for our members. If anyone is interested in becoming junior secretary, club house caretaker, junior Driffield League co-ordinator or wants to help with sponsorship - please contact Melinda at juniors@pocklingtontennis.com.

Have a Merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year.

P.S. Don't forget that Pocklington Tennis Club Coaching gift vouchers are available and make perfect Christmas presents. For more information please contact Sean on 07772 151 545 or email sean@pocklingtontennis.com.
