Announcing Belle Starr’s Artist in Residence
Collaboration and creativity are at the heart of small businesses, and in celebration of both, Belle Starr is excited to welcome Christina Swingdler, artist and maker of Christina Anastasia jewelry, as the boutique’s resident artist. We have some exciting plans for the year ahead, and we look forward to sharing fun experiences and beautiful new products with our customers.
The first experience of the Artist in Residence collaboration is on Saturday, March 1st, featuring a Christina Anastasia pop-up jewelry studio from 1-4 pm and 6-9 pm in the Belle Starr storefront (405 2nd Street in Old Town Eureka). Customers who purchase a Belle Starr shirt or dress for $50+ on March 1st can take advantage of the pop-up studio and purchase a pair of matching earrings for $20–custom made on the spot by Christina. As time allows, custom earrings (made from beads/materials present) will also be available for $45, with no qualifying purchase.

You’ll see more collaborations like this over the coming year, with pop-up boutiques, Friday Night Market collaborations, and in-store events. Also look for the release of Bella Christina jewelry: a couture Belle Starr artist series. Featuring four seasonal releases, the limited-edition collection will launch in April. Dedicated fans who collect multiple styles over the year will be eligible for additional perks, to be announced.

History of McKinleyville Exhibit
This groundbreaking exhibit explores the stories of McKinleyville’s rich and diverse history, showcasing the evolution of this vibrant community.
With a population of over 16,000, McKinleyville has a historical legacy worth preserving. There have been efforts in the past to preserve its varied history, like the historical photos that hung in the lobby of McKinleyville’s Burger King many years ago and the 2019 Pop-up Museum, but nothing like this. Thanks to the generosity of Mad River Rotary, the Clarke is proud to offer visitors a well-researched and engaging experience that delves into the area's past.
The exhibit will covers:
- Indigenous history of the McKinleyville region.
- Stories of early settlement and pioneering ranching families.
- The fascinating history of the “foggiest airport” in the U.S., cleared with flamethrowers during WWII.
- The impact of WWII and the development of essential infrastructure.
- The rise of the poultry industry,
- The development of local schools.
- The Hammond Trail and surrounding historical sites.
- Notable residents, visitors, and historical sites that remain to this day.
Visitors not only gain insights into McKinleyville’s past but also help contribute to preserving its legacy. Portions of the exhibit will transform into a traveling display after its run at the museum, ensuring the stories reach communities across the region and beyond.

Florence Harrie (1889–1981, Karuk)
Step into the world of Florence Harrie (1889–1981, Karuk)
and experience the legacy of a master weaver. Born at Katimîin, the Karuk center of the world, Florence returned to her ancestral home after boarding school to learn the art of gathering and weaving from renowned weavers like Elizabeth Hickox. She made her living through her craft and today, her great-grandson, Bradley Marshall, has lovingly curated this exhibit to bring her story home.
What makes this exhibit so special?
- Florence’s personal weaving chair
- The last basket she ever wove
- A ceremonial dress made by her descendants that still dances in ceremonies today

Re-Play: A Reconfiguration of PLAY the immersive installation of color and fiber by Becky Evans and Lori Goodman
This winter, Tidal Gallery proudly presents an exciting and immersive exhibition by artists Becky Evans and Lori Goodman, running from January 18th to March 25th, 2025. Re-Play offers a fresh take on their innovative collaborative work, reimagining their approach to engage with a new audience. Featuring a striking collection of hand-dyed pieces made from excelsior packing wool, Becky and Lori explore the material’s duality—traditionally used for cushioning and packing, but here transformed into a vivid, textural medium. By experimenting with color and form, the artists challenge perceptions of everyday materials, creating an environment that invites deep, tactile engagement from visitors. Re-Play not only showcases their unique artistic vision but also highlights the unexpected beauty and complexity of humble materials.
