UPDATE on the Restoration of KATE

My name is Penny Browne and I am a member of the Classic Yacht Association. Currently a group of boat builders including Bernard Rhodes and other interested and knowledgeable people including my brother, are restoring the cutter KATE, built in 1898 on Waiheke Island.  One of the aims in the restoration is to use it as a youth sail training vessel. More at

However, the Trust needs more funds to complete the vessel by installing a diesel engine. The web site for this endeavour is for anyone who is interested and/or may like to assist..

My brother Mike Delamore, a very experienced sailor and ship’s engineer, is at present sailing his 34ft Van De Stad steel sloop round NZ to raise money for this enterprise. Interested people can follow his progress through this web site with a PredictWind map, his course, and accompanying blogs which are well written and informative.

Should you want more information you can call me at 09 4281523 or mobile 021627095.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Friday 23 October – PIC Coastal Classic.

The 2020 PIC Coastal Classic is scheduled for Friday 23 October, and entries are now open for the popular Labour weekend race. Starting in the vicinity of Devonport Wharf, the 119 nautical mile challenge is again expected to draw seasoned yachties and beginner sailors alike for a long weekend that’s more than a yacht race. Signalling the start of the summer boating season since 1982, the PIC Coastal Classic has become one of the most important events on New Zealand’s sailing calendar. The notice of race is available, and organisers are now taking entries online, so it's time to put that date into your calendar, book your leave, and start getting ready for the traditional Labour Weekend race up to Russell.

Cruising Rally Division

For members not interested in racing, there is also the Cruising Rally division that allows up to four hours motoring... more information on that here

The 2020 Vessel Register is now online.

There is an opportunity, alongside the many challenges we're all facing, to come together and strengthen the classic and wooden boating field in ways that we never have.

So, today we're excited to announce something we've been working on for quite awhile — The Worldwide Classic Boat Show . . .

The lifeblood of this field is provided by festivals, shows, schools, museums, boatbuilders and many other artisans, publications and organizations. The truth is, we haven't all been as connected and aware of each other's work as we could be. Then the pandemic arrived and has been creating more distance between us all.

Over the past few months we have been asking this one question over and over:

"How can we use Off Center Harbor's unique worldwide reach to help most?"

We are developing a place for us all to connect, inform and inspire each other — a place where we can gather together to strengthen the world of classic and wooden boats so that we come out of this period much stronger than we were before it began. That includes enthusiasts' awareness of, connection with, and support of organizations and craftspeople in the field.

Coming in February 2021.

(ONLY ONE of the following options is all that is needed to stay in the loop. Choose whichever best suits you.)

This will also keep you in the loop on our updates.

Submitting a Boat for the Show:

You can CLICK HERE to leave your initial thoughts about this new event as a comment at the bottom of the post announcing it.

Thank you in advance for your support in this new endeavor.
