As we begin our 2023 celebration of Black History Month, we remember and celebrate our African-American heritage. The four African Americans selected to highlight today are:
Frederick Douglass (born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey; 1817-1895) was an American Social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the Abolitionist Movement in Massachusetts and New York, becoming famous for his oratory and incisely anti-slavery writings.
Madam C.J. Walker (born Sarah Breedlove; (1867-1919) was an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist. She is recorded as a first female self-made millionaire in America in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The daughter of former slaves, Mary Jane McLeod Bethune ( 1875-1955) became one of the most important black educators, civil and women's rights leaders and government officials of the 20th century. The college she founded set educational standards for today's black colleges, and role as an advisor to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave African Americans an advocate in government.
Dr Carter G Woodson (1875-1950) was a scholar his dedication to celebrating the historic contributions of Black people led to the establishment of Black History Month, marked every February since 1976. Woodson fervently believed that Black people should be proud of their heritage and all Americans should understand the largely overlooked achievements of Black America.
Let us continue to remember and celebrate our African-American Heritage and to God be the Glory!
