Today's Bible Study Lesson
“The
Creating Word Becomes Flesh”
Aim: Explore the
meaning of Word for the world;
Find
true inspiration for life in Jesus; and Live
in relationship with Creator God because of the “light” (grace
and truth) that Jesus gives.
Background:
John 1:1-14
Bible Lesson:
John
1:1-14
“All
things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that
was made.” John 1:3 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
The Apostle
John is the author of the Gospel According to
John and the New Testament
Books of 1, 2, and 3 John. John
was one of Jesus twelve
disciples and on many
occasions he was referred
to as “the
disciple that Jesus loved.” While
dying on the cross for the sins of humankind, Jesus assigned the
care of His “earthly mother” to John. John was a
member of Jesus’ inner
circle of disciples, Peter, James, and John who were with Jesus at
the Mount of Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. The
Gospel According to John differs from the Synoptic Gospels
(According to Matthew, to Mark, and to Luke), in that it deals in
great detail with many
doctrinal matters and not
just
facts.
-
John
1:1-3, Jesus is the Word: John
begins the chapter explaining that Jesus was the Logos,
the Word and that He already existed in the beginning, wherever and
whenever the beginning was. He further plainly states that Jesus
was both with God and He was God. Not only did Jesus always exist,
but all that was created was
created by Him and there
was nothing that was created
that did not come from Him.
-
John
1:4-9, Jesus is the Light: John
states that Jesus gave life to everything created. The metaphor of
light and darkness is used, where darkness represents evil/sin
and light the opposite. John clearly acknowledges that Jesus brought
light to mankind who was in darkness. Just like
darkness cannot overcome light,
the world could not
overshadow Jesus’
entrance into the world or
hinder His mission in any way.
The mission of John the Baptizer was to introduce and to prepare
mankind for Jesus’ entrance into the world. John the Baptizer gave
testimony of the availability of the Light of the Word, Jesus, to
all who would hear. As light in darkness provides clarity for one to
find one’s way, Jesus’ message provides clarity for
how one is to live life and
to live it more abundantly.
- John
1:10-14, Jesus Reveals God’s
Character: Jesus, the Second
Person of the God Head, entered His own creation in the form of a
man and the world did not recognize Him. Jesus even came to his own
earthly family and community and they
rejected Him.
(“But
Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his
own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. And he
could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a
few sick folk, and healed [them].” Mark 6:4-5 KJV).
But to those who believed
and accepted Jesus, they were granted the opportunity to become the
children of God. These believers were born again, not physically,
but spiritually and became new creations.
(“Therefore, if anyone [is] in Christ, [he is] a new
creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have
become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV) The
Second Person of the God Head, took on a human form and dwelt among
mankind. His life
was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. Being both fully human
and fully divine, when one
saw Jesus
one saw
His glory, the glory of God the Father’s one and Only Son. Jesus’
mission on earth was
to make known Father God and provide salvation from sin for all who
would believe and accept Him as Lord and Savior.
Take
Aways:
-
Jesus
was the personification of God’s Word which expressed God’s Will
and Way.
-
The
Word provides light in this dark world. This
Light
illuminates the path to righteousness for
all who will receive and accept Him.
-
The
only way to Eternal Life is through Jesus Christ.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Let
your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew
5:16 KJV
“Therefore,
if anyone [is] in Christ, [he is] a new creation; old things have
passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians
5:17 NKJV
“Let
this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in
the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But
made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a
servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in
fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death,
even the death of the cross.” Philippians
2:5-8 KJV
“For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through him might be saved.” John
3:16-17 KJV
“And
he said to [them] all, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny
himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” Luke
9:23
KJV
