Vol. 13, June 2024

June was a truly unforgettable month for our study abroad programs! Alongside our summer offerings for current Harding students — HUF, HUG, HIZ, Mostly Music and SURF — we had two other unique programs take place this month! Scholars Abroad offered incoming freshmen a captivating two-week exploration of Greece, while our Centennial Alumni Tour of Egypt partnered with the HUG program for an immersive journey through Egypt. Whether you're a current Harding student, prospective student, or alum, June provided everyone with opportunities to travel with us. Please continue reading to learn more about these amazing adventures!

Scholars Abroad

For Incoming Freshmen

Scholars Abroad offers a two-week trip to Greece for incoming freshmen, providing an opportunity to earn a Bible class credit while studying the Mediterranean World as experienced by the Apostle Paul. The journey includes visits to Athens, Corinth, Delphi, Meteora, Thermopylae, Sounion, and more! This year, in honor of the upcoming Olympic Games, we expanded our itinerary to include sites typically reserved for the full semester at HUG program. We explored all four Panhellenic Games locations: Olympia, Corinth, Delphi, and Nemea! Assistant Dean of the Honors College and tour leader Jim Miller had this to say about the group's time in Greece:

From following Paul’s missionary journeys and visiting the Panhellenic games sites, to studying the classical ideas of truth, beauty, goodness, justice, liberty and equality, and celebrating a student’s baptism, our group shares a special bond that only traveling together can create. We also ate a lot of really good gyros and gelato together, and that bond is also strong.

The applications for next summer's tour are now open, but space is limited! If you know someone who will be between their senior year of high school and freshman year of college next summer and is interested in this enriching experience, encourage them to learn more by visiting our website through the button below.

HUF & SURF
Harding University in Florence & Summer Undergraduate Research in Florence

The month kicked off with the summer HUF group and the SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research in Florence) group traveling to Rome. There, they spent time touring places like the Colosseum, the Vatican, the Roman Forum, and the Catacombs, among others. Both groups also ventured to Lucca and Pisa for further exploration. By the middle of the month, SURF concluded its program while HUF students set out on a week of independent travel across Europe. Now back in Italy, the HUF students are capping off June with an excursion to southern Italy.

HUG

Harding University in Greece

June began with the HUG group embarking on a 10-day tour of Egypt alongside the Harding University Centennial Alumni Tour of Egypt group. Together, they explored iconic pyramids, temples, tombs, the Sphinx, and more! A highlight of their adventure was a memorable 3-night Nile cruise, where they visited legendary sites like Karnak, Luxor, and the Valley of the Kings. For a detailed summary of their journey, you can view the alumni tour's itinerary here. (Interested in joining us for this unforgettable experience during the 2027 total solar eclipse over Egypt? Stay tuned for the 2027 full itinerary, available in October 2024.)

Upon returning to Greece from Egypt, the HUG students took a day trip to Marathon and are now concluding the month with travel to northern Greece. Their itinerary includes visits to Delphi, Meteora, Vergina, Thessaloniki, and Philippi.

HIZ

Harding in Zambia

June saw the HIZ group arrive at their home in Zambia – the Namwianga Mission. Days at Namwianga are filled with class time and volunteering in various areas on the mission including schools, medical clinics, churches, working with children on the mission, and more! The students were even able to shadow HU Board of Trustees member Dr. Robert Walker at the hospital this month.

Adventures outside of the mission took the group white water rafting, interacting with elephants, and to Victoria Falls where they even saw a moonbow! Perhaps the most exciting activity of the month was a two-day safari ride where they saw lions, hippos, giraffes, monkeys, crocodiles and other wildlife up close!

Mostly Music

The Mostly Music group continued their grand tour of Europe's musical history by starting the month in Florence, Italy before continuing northward to Venice. Their journey then took them through Vienna and Salzburg in Austria, Prague in the Czech Republic, Leipzig in Germany, Paris in France, and finally London, England! At each destination, they immersed themselves in the rich musical heritage by visiting museums and cathedrals, attending concerts and operas, and exploring other sites of historical and cultural significance.

Looking ahead, the Mostly Music program is next scheduled for summer 2026. For updates and more information, please visit the website as details become available.
