If you’re reading this it’s because you’ve signed up for my newsletter at some point. And thank you for doing so! Even though I don’t send this out as frequently as I should—and that’s how I’m shaking things up.
I’m moving my very sporadic email newsletter over to Substack where I plan on being much more regular with my postings. I look at Substack as a cross between blogs and email newsletters; it’s a much easier platform for me to use. Which is why I vow I will be posting regularly; once a week is my initial goal.
What does this mean for you? Well, not much, actually, except that you’ll have the chance to read my musings more frequently. Substack allows me to import the email address of all those who subscribe to this newsletter—and don’t worry, your info will not be shared in any other way, you won’t suddenly start getting inundated with Substack communications except for mine. (Trust me; I subscribe to several newsletters on Substack and never have I received unwanted communications.) Simply put, you’ll receive an email anytime I publish a new post, and you can read it in the body of the email or go to the Substack site.
And that’s it! Easy peasy. Best of all, I’m keeping everything free to anyone who subscribes; nothing will be behind a paywall.
Why am I doing this? Well, for one thing it makes my content searchable, so it will hopefully reach a wider audience and result in more subscribers. This kind of thing is very important to any author these days. And it’s a direct line of communication between author and reader in a friendlier format for those of us who love to write and love to read. Instagram and Facebook have become so video-centric they actively discourage and bury posts that are text-only. Substack is all about text, so that’s a good thing! (Says the person who writes for a living.)
I’m looking forward to sharing more insight into my previous books—even talking about books I wrote and didn’t publish, and why!—as well as sharing info about new books. My next novel will be published in just about a year and I’ll be sharing all the info about that ASAP! And I’ll just be my own usual self, a semi-cranky author in Chicago living her best life with the help of really supportive, yet cute, shoes and flowing dresses that are definitely not muumuus. No, I swear, really, trust me. They are not muumuus.
(Maybe they are.)
And one more thing for fans of the podcast I do with my friend and fellow author Edward Kelsey Moore—we’re changing that up as well and Who the Hell Are We? will also have its own Substack page, which I’ll share as soon as it’s up. We’re going to continue to talk about old movies but we’re doing it differently. And we’re starting a book club! So you can read along and listen as we discuss the book. There might be some opportunities for us to occasionally invite listeners to discuss with us, as well. We’re working on that, so stay tuned!
I’m still on Instagram and Facebook. But I hope you remain a reader of my newsletter on Substack! I think we can build a really cool community together.
I’ll start posting on my Substack—Melanie Benjamin: The Reluctant Extrovert—in a couple of days, so look for it in your inbox!
