ABOUT MARYANN

MaryAnn Diorio writes women’s fiction from a small, quaint, Victorian town in southern New Jersey where neighbors still stop to chat while walking their dogs, houses still sport wide, wrap-around front porches, and the charming downtown still finds kids licking lollipops and old married folks holding hands. A true Jersey girl, MaryAnn is a big fan of Jersey diners, Jersey tomatoes, and the Jersey shore.

A WORD IN DUE SEASON

by MaryAnn Diorio, PhD

Dear ,

The end of summer for me always signals a new beginning. Ever since my school days, I have loved autumn. It is my favorite season of the year for several reasons:

__It marks a fresh start.
__It is vibrant with color.
__The air is crisp and clear.
__It's conducive to long, exhilarating walks.
__Etc., etc., etc.

What about you? Do you see the Fall as a new beginning?

This Fall, we Christ-Followers may, indeed, have a new beginning if the Rapture occurs. May prophecy scholars believe that the Rapture of the Church coulrd, indeed, occur this month, on the Feast of Rosh Hashanah (the Feat of Trumpets), the feast the beginning of which no man knows the day or the hour.

Rosh Hashanah is a two-day feast. No one knows when it will begin until the new moon appears. The new moon could appear on one of two days: the first or the second day of Rosh Hashanah. Once the new moon appears, the Jews know which day is the day of the Feast of Trumpets.

Now listen to this and tell me if you don't get chills. In the Hebrew culture, the new moon is referred to as "the twinkling of an eye"!  Is this amazing, or what?

So, dear sister or brother in Christ, this could be the month when the Lord takes us home. Be watching for His return. Be listening for the trumpet sound. Be telling others about Jesus!

Maranatha! Come soon, Lord Jesus!

Love and Blessings,

MaryAnn

ON THE HOMEFRONT . . .

__I have some good news to share this month. My 11-year-old grandson Christopher has been in the Philadelphia Boys Choir for three years. He has an angelic voice.

Well, Christopher is in the process of auditioning to move up to the level of candidate for his red jacket, an honor that comes after much training, effort, and practice. We are so proud of him for all of his efforts toward achieving this goal and pray for his continued success as he works toward his goal.

__My grandchildren have started another year of homeschooling. My daughter Lia and son-in-law Peter do an amazing job of educating their children with the Word of God as their foundation.

__Our daughter Gina has moved to Georgia and is settling in that beautiful state after her marriage to our wonderful son-in-law Tito. We pray God's blessings on them as they grow in love for the Lord and for each other. Lord willing, Dom and I will get to visit them this fall.

The Italian Chronicles Trilogy

What readers are saying about The Italian Chronicles Trilgy ...

"Intense. Gripping. Emotive. Heartrending. And hauntingly beautiful describes 'The Madonna of Pisano' in a nutshell. Not my usual read, I found myself totally intrigued by the beautiful Italian setting and characters in the village of Pisano, Sicily. Inspired by a true story, this novel is a new twist on 'The Scarlet Letter'—guaranteed to break the reader's heart and put it back together again with the glue of forgiveness." ~ Amazon Reviewer

"Awesome story! I couldn't put it down!" ~ Daniela M., Avid Reader

"Excellent characters, dramatic plot. Beautifully written, giving wonderful feeling for the setting in place and time. Emotionally intense situations, satisfying resolution. Among the two or three best novels I have read this year. Highly recommended." ~ Dr. Donn Taylor, Novelist and Former Professor of English

THE INSIDE STORY . . .

One of my most popular novels is titled In Black and White. It is an interracial love story between a white woman and a black man, set in 1950s America and Ghana, a period of intense racial prejudice in both countries.

Interestingly, I got the idea for this story way back in the early 90s. Although I started writing the novel at that time, I didn't get very far with it because the timing wasn't right. Somehow, I knew, on a gut level, that this story would have to wait to be written. It was a case of my not being ready psychologically, professionally, and, most of all, spiritually to write this story. It was also a case of God's timing. God had a work to do in me before this story could be born. It was neither my time, nor His.

I grew up in the 1950s, the time period during which In Black and White takes place. I lived about 30 miles from Levittown, Pennsylvania, an all-white suburban community that made national headlines because of racial discrimination against a black family that had moved into the community. (An insightful, heart-wrenching documentary titled "Crisis in Levittown" was made of this incident. For those of you who are interested in viewing it, here is the link to the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXQQ9o3R-Rc).

Prejudice was in the air back then. It was common to hear unkind talk about "colored people" who moved into neighborhoods and caused property values to plummet and crime to soar. Strangely—and thankfully--those comments did not penetrate my soul, as I grew up with parents who abhorred prejudice and taught me to respect all people as precious creations of God. My best childhood friend was a black girl who lived on my street.

Growing up with a close black friend taught me much about people and about life. I learned that my friend and I were very much alike. We both experienced the emotions of life in much the same way. We both worried about tests at school. We both feared the mean, gnarly old lady who lived in the rickety house on our street. We both had great fun visiting the ice cream shop on the corner at the top of the hill. We were two normal kids trying to understand the confusing messages about "white' and "colored" that came from some grownups in the world around us.

The years transpired. I went to college, earned my bachelor's degree, and then went on to earn a graduate degree. I also married a wonderful man to whom I have been married for 52 blessed years.

Prejudice reared its ugly head again when, shortly after I married, I applied for a teaching job in a prominent school district in a major mid-western city. When I appeared for my interview with the superintendent of the school district, he took one look at me and at my name (I am an olive-skinned Italian) and gruffly said, "Go back to your own people!" No consideration whatsoever of my educational credentials (I had a Master's degree in Italian Language and Literature from the top language school in the country), or my teaching experience. Nothing.

His words struck my soul like a nuclear bomb. For the first time in my life, I was speechless. Never had I experienced prejudice on a personal level. And it stung!

(To be continued next month, Lord willing)

MY HAPPY PLACES . . .

Happy Places are places in my home or in my travels that make me happy. Here are two for this month:

Top Row: Left to Right:

--My Prayer Chair. This is where I usually have my early morning time with God. The lovely afghan was made by my precious daughter, Lia Cristina.

--My Hydroponics Garden. My husband and I have taken to hydroponic gardening. Our unit is right in our kitchen, providing fresh vegetables only a step away. We have great fun tending to our garden. I tell my husband it must be genetic. Both of us had grandfathers who were farmers. :)

Bottom Row:

__My Tea Basket. This is the place in my kitchen where I keep all of my different flavors of tea. I call it my Tea Center. It is open to anyone who wants a delicious cup of hot tea.
