Today's Bible Study Lesson
“David Administers Justice and Kindness”
Aim: Explore
David’s
kindness toward Mephibosheth as an act of justice and equity;
Reflect
on
the value of keeping our word; and Show
radical
kindness to someone in need.
Background:
2 Samuel 9
Bible Lesson:
2 Samuel 9:1-12
Memory
Verse:
“Now David said, "Is there still anyone who is
left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for
Jonathan's sake?"” 2 Samuel 9:1 NKJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Saul
was Israel’s first choice as King. They sought to have a king
like the surrounding nations. God Himself had been their King, but
the people wanted a King that they could see like other nations.
Jonathan was Saul’s son, who would be the natural heir to the
throne, when Saul passed off the scene. However, God selected David,
the shepherd boy, son of Jesse to succeed Saul as King. The prophet
Samuel was directed to anoint David as King even before Saul’s
reign as King ended. Jonathan, the expected heir to his father’s
throne recognized that God’s Hand
was on David and that David was the one selected by God to succeed
Saul as King. David and Jonathan formed a unique and unbreakable
bond of friendship and love for one another (1 Samuel 20:16-17).
Even when King Saul sought to kill David, Jonathan intervened and
both pleaded for David’s life and aided David in escaping from the
grasp of his father Saul whose intentions were to slay David, who
was
innocent
of any crime. During a battle against the archenemy, the
Philistines, both Jonathan and his father, King Saul, died.
-
Our
study opens as King David has defeated many of
Israel’s
enemies and his kingdom is fully established. At a time when, King
David could have
gloated
over his victories and relax, He asked the question, are there any
heirs of King Saul still alive that he could show kindness to
because of his love for King Saul’s son, Jonathan. This was an
unusual intent for the saying “to the victor goes the spoils”
and usually the conquerer executes all of the heirs of the
previous
regime, not look to show kindness to them. King David, who
was a
man after God’s own heart, sought to fulfill his covenant to show
kindness to Jonathan’s heirs even though Jonathan was dead.
-
King
David summoned one of King Saul’s former
servants,
Ziba, and asked him whether there were any survivors from King
Saul’s family. Ziba’s answer was yes, only one, a son of
Jonathan. He further explained that this heir was cripple in both
feet, in other words he could not even walk. When word arrived that
King Saul and Jonathan were killed in battle, while his nurse fled
to protect Jonathan’s young son, who was only five years old,
she dropped him and he became lame. His name was Mephibosheth. Upon
hearing that one of Saul’s heirs who was Jonathan’s son yet
lived, King David sent Ziba to Lo-debar to bring Mephibosheth to
him. The name Lo-debar means “without pasture” which may
indicate in this heavily agricultural area, that Lo-debar was a poor
area.
-
Mephibosheth
bowed and humbled himself before King David not knowing what this
encounter with the king would mean for him. King David calmed him
by telling him not to be afraid. He quickly explained that he
intended to show him kindness because of his promise to Jonathan,
his
father. King David restored ownership of King Saul’s property to
Mephibosheth
and promised a permanent place to eat at the king’s table. A
surprised Mephibosheth
responded
by asking the King why
would he
show such kindness to a dead dog like him?
In that era, many of the dogs were strays not the pampered canines
of our time. So, he
expressed
his feeling of unworthiness for such kindness and grace.
-
King
David knew Mephibosheth,
who was lame in both feet could not work the land that once belonged
to his grandfather, King Saul, so he directed Ziba along with his
fifteen sons and twenty servants to farm the land for him to produce
food for
the
household. From that time on, Ziba’s household became
Mephibosheth’s
servants and Mephibosheth
ate regularly at King David’s table, like one of the king’s own
sons.
Take
Aways:
-
It
is important for us to be true to our word whether there is anyone
to hold us accountable or not. We are always accountable to God.
-
Kindness
is always in order but when it is extended without the expectation
of reciprocation, it is truly sweet!
-
God’s
providential care can come at unexpected times and from unexpected
sources
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“[Let]
love [be] without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is
good. 10 [Be] kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love,
in honor giving preference to one another;” Romans 12:9-10 NKJV
“"A
new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have
loved you, that you also love one another. "By this all will
know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."”
John 13:34-35 NKJV
“Let
brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers:
for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:1-2
KJV
“Ye
have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and
hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them
that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them
which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” Matthew 5:43-44 KJV
“And
let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap,
if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good
unto all [men], especially unto them who are of the household of
faith.” Galatians 6:9-10 KJV
