Approximately £4m is being invested to increase the capacity of this key road which connects residential areas of North and West Swindon with major employment areas and the town centre.

Once the scheme is complete, the extra lane, which will run from the Meads roundabout to Withymead roundabout, will accommodate an additional 2,600 vehicles per hour in flowing traffic.

You can read more about the overall plans for the scheme and why it's required here. You'll also find the drawings of the final scheme and some FAQs on this webpage too.

What's recently happened?

The majority of the road base for the additional lane from the Meads roundabout to Westmead roundabout has been laid and resurfacing of this section has begun.

  • New road signage has been installed.
  • Utility companies have been on site to check that services are diverted before foundation work for phase two begins.
  • Contractors are completing the installation of the signalised crossroad junction and toucan crossing which will replace the Westmead roundabout.

What's happening next?

At the end of this month, the section from Great Western Way to Westmead Drive will open for motorists to access Westmead industrial estate.

Work has already begun on the next phase of the improvement scheme but, once the new section is open, the road between Westmead Drive and Withymead roundabout (by Simply Gym and Kidz About) will be closed to traffic. A clearly signposted diversion will remain in place.

This will allow contractors to finish installing the signalised crossroad junction and toucan crossing at Westmead Drive, replacing the roundabout. The additional northbound lane will then be extended to the Withymead roundabout.

Access to Westmead industrial estate will be via Mead roundabout; there will be no access to Stonehill Green. Access to Stonehill Green will be via The Chesters and buses will remain diverted via Great Western Way.
