Supervisors of embodied practices have distinct pressures and little chance to explore these issues in their own movement practice. Dr. Bonnie Meekums has kindly offered to create a safe, nurturing space during her visit to Auckland in which clinical supervisors can consider, through moving, witnessing and reflecting, the impact of their work on their bodymind. Numbers are limited.
For some, their work might have to do with being at the cliff face of safeguarding issues. For others, maybe they are more engaged in educational or supportive supervision, guiding their supervises to develop greater understanding, confidence, and competence. For others still, the supervisory relationship might be the ground in which the supervisee’s issues with their client become mirrored, or the client’s issues might mirror the therapist’s own unresolved or partially resolved issues. And so on. The supervisor’s body might absorb and contain each of these scenarios, often without the supervisor’s conscious awareness.
In this workshop-style supervision session, we will spend some time thinking and talking about the three main issues outlined above and, if time permits, others that emerge. After that, we will warm up in movement and then spend some time working in small groups or pairs, using an approach derived from Authentic Movement to explore how this work impacts on each individual. In this way, everyone who attends will explore a relevant issue in movement and share this with at least one other person, inviting witnessing by the other person or persons if they choose. There will also be the opportunity to jot down any words or images that the mover and witness feel moved to record, before this sharing. Then we will return to the larger group to ground our learning before closing.
