First off, we’d like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who donated to this year’s New World Family2Family Foodbank Appeal! We’ve had bags from New World Wānaka and Three Parks rolling in by the van-load and filling our shelves, ready to give back to the community this winter.
If you’ve seen our latest June blogs on food support, you’ll have read that our Food Security Project Manager, Daisy Watford, has been auditing our current food parcel process and developing some ideas to minimise food waste in our community. Since Covid-19, the need for food parcels has tripled, so we’re making improvements to become more efficient and self-sufficient - the first of which are now in place.
Whilst we know that clients appreciate the flexibility of the New World vouchers we have been providing, we’re finding that grants and donations can no longer cover the cost of them. Therefore, we won't be supplying New World vouchers to clients and will instead focus on ensuring the Foodbank is well-stocked with fresh items such as fruit and veg, meat and dairy products. We’ll also be training up a team of volunteers to help clients choose and pack their parcels within certain time windows, and we’re looking into the possibility of an online click and collect service.
To reduce the pressure on our front desk team during this transition, we’re asking clients to try to collect their parcels within the following timeframes.
- Monday: 1pm-4pm
- Wednesday: 11am-2pm
- Friday: 9am-12pm
From Monday 26 July, the Foodbank will only be operating during these times – although the front desk team will be on-hand as always to provide advice and connect people to support, Monday to Friday, 9:00-5:00pm.
We welcome any feedback on these changes over the next few weeks, so do please get in touch with Daisy.
