The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, an initiative funded by the European Commission, in cooperation with SABIC is organising the online event The Circular Carbon Economy: Furthering EU GCC Energy Partnership, taking place on Wednesday 15 July 2020 at 11.30 CET / 12.30 KSA time.
The meeting aims to highlight circular carbon economy challenges, opportunities technologies and policies, discussing low-emissions pathways for both regions and partnerships. It will engage high level experts and representatives from the EC, EU and GCC think tanks, industry and policy institutions.
The session will be moderated by Frank Wouters, Director, EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network while esteemed speakers will join the discussion, namely: Mr Fareed Alasaly, Chairman of the GCC Energy Committee, Mr Mark van Stiphout, Deputy Head of Unit of Innovation, Clean Technologies and Competitiveness, European Commission, DG Energy, Dr Abdulaziz Aljodai, Corporate Programs Director, SABIC, Mr Milan Elkerbout, Research Fellow, Centre of European Policy Studies - CEPS, and Mr Peter Mangnus, Avantium (TBC).

The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, with the support of the Clean Energy Business Council (CEBC) is organising a series of webinars entitled Energy Efficiency: A key driver for clean energy transition. The second webinar Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Smart Technologies will take place on Tuesday 21 July 2020 at 12.00 CET.
The webinar will debate innovative and smart technologies and solutions suitable for both regions of the EU and the GCC for the building sector. It also aims to exchange relevant EU and GCC best practices and lessons learned as well as opportunities for EU GCC partnerships, while it will seek answers to the following questions:
- Which opportunities/options and challenges exist for energy efficiency in the building sector at local and regional levels?
- What are the most sustainable technologies/measures that can be used in energy efficiency actions/projects in the building sector?
- What are the key drivers for innovative and smart building concepts?
- Can digitization in buildings be leveraged to improve efficiency and drive down costs?
- Which key actions/recommendations should be suggested to promote collaboration between the EU and the GCC stakeholders?

The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, with the support of CENER, is organising the online workshop "CSP and Desalination" taking place on Wednesday 22 July 2020 at 11.00 CET.
The online workshop will review current CSP Desalination technologies, technical analysis of basic Desalination systems (CSO and other technologies), and one case study using a techno-economical approach.

The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, with the support of the Clean Energy Business Council (CEBC) is organising a series of webinars entitled Energy Efficiency: A key driver for clean energy transition. The theme of the first online event was: Energy Efficiency in the Building Sector: Strategies, Regulations and Business Models to Promote EE Technologies that took place on Tuesday 7 July 2020 at 12.00 CET.
The webinar debated policies, business models and technology solutions suitable for both regions of the EU and the GCC for the building sector. It also aimed to exchange relevant EU and GCC best practices and lessons learned as well as opportunities for EU GCC partnerships. The webinar was moderated by Dr. Mustapha Taoumi, Energy Technology Expert, EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network while presentations were delivered by Eng. Hydrogen and Renewables: Drivers of Mediterranean Energy Market Integration Post Covid Thursday 25 June 2020

Frank Wouters, Network’s Director participated at the “Hydrogen and Renewables: Drivers of Mediterranean Energy Market Integration Post Covid” online event organised by the International Association for Energy Economics. The webinar examined how the green stimulus packages could accelerate the switch to renewable energy in Europe and renewable energy investment and employment around the Mediterranean, why green hydrogen could be a very important complement to renewable-based electricity, what opportunities emerge for the southern shore of the Mediterranean to develop its huge renewable energy potential, whether water stress is a constraint, and what the implications are for Mediterranean energy trade. The discussion was moderated by Jonathan Walters, former Director in the World Bank's MENA department. Apart from Frank Wouters, the session joined Dr Silvia Pariente-David, senior advisor and energy consultant on energy and climate change, Dr Badr Ikken, Director General of IRESEN. The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, with the support of the Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA) organised the “Integration of Variable Renewable Energy into the Grid” training webinar which took place on Tuesday 23 June 2020 at 12.00 CET.
The training webinar aimed to exchange experiences, knowledge and best practices on all aspects of VRE integration into the grid. Moreover, relevant EU and GCC best practices and case studies, as well as opportunities for EU GCC partnerships were highlighted. The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network organised the web discussion "Hydrogen in the European Green Deal, a new vector for international cooperation" that took place on Thursday 18 June 2020 at 11.00 CET. The event was organised with the support of Hydrogen Europe and Dii Desert Energy. The web discussion elaborated on the intraregional cooperation mechanisms that could drive the development of hydrogen projects in regions that could become potential suppliers of green fuels to Europe. The web discussion discussed the market, timelines, pathways, technology and technology transfer, finance and roadmaps. Energy transitions in the EU and the GCC: Challenges and Opportunities Tuesday 16 June 2020

The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network organised the online event “Energy transitions in the EU and the GCC: Challenges and opportunities” on Tuesday 16 June 2020 at 11.00 CET. The online event was organised with the support of the Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA), the Clean Energy Business Council (CEBC), and the Arab Council for Sustainable Energy (ARABCSE).
The online event provided an overview of the goals and activities that the two regions are undertaking to achieve their clean energy targets including the EU green deal and the different GCC country visions and strategies. Also, it discussed the challenges that the two regions are facing and what can be done to transform them in business and economic opportunities. In addition, the event highlighted the efforts that both regions are undertaking to foster their collaboration in the clean energy and climate change domains. The event was be moderated by Frank Wouters, Director, EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network and Dr. Mustapha Taoumi, Energy Technology Expert, EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network. The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network organised the web discussion "Empowering the private sector for climate change action" on Thursday 11 June 2020 at 12.00 CET.
Action from the private sector on climate change is increasingly seen by the global community as critical. Businesses can operate across national and regional boundaries and can act more quickly than governments. Many companies in the EU and GCC are also setting increasingly ambitious goals for co2 reduction and clean energy that often outstrip national targets. The webinar heard the views from businesses operating in both the EU and GCC on a few key questions such as:
- What is driving businesses to act on climate change and clean energy?
- How can governments facilitate and accelerate action?
- How is the current covid-19 crisis affecting business action on climate change?
The web discussion was moderated by Tanzeed Alam, Climate Change Convener at EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network while the panel joined Ibrahim N. The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network organised a series of webinars on the topic “Scaling-Up Solar PV Roof Top”. The second webinar “State of the art, project construction and O&M” took place on Tuesday 9 June 2020 at 12.00 CET and was organised with the support of the Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA).
The webinar debated the key challenges and opportunities in PV rooftop segment in policies, technology advancement and investors perspective in commercial, industrial and residential space. It also aimed to discuss Solar PV Roof Top options suitable for the region, exchange relevant EU and GCC best practices and lesson learned as well as opportunities for EU GCC partnerships. Smart and sustainable local energy planning Tuesday 2 June 2020

The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, in collaboration with the Environmental Center for Arab Towns (ECAT) and with the support of Dubai Municipality and Arab Towns Organisation, organised the webinar “Smart and sustainable local energy planning”, on Tuesday 2 June 2020 at 10.00 CET. The webinar aimed to exchange experiences, knowledge and best practices on all aspects of smart energy cities and intelligent energy management, as well as smart and sustainable local energy planning. Moreover, during the webinar relevant EU and GCC best practices and case studies, as well as opportunities for EU GCC partnerships were highlighted. The webinar “Smart and sustainable local energy planning” focused on:
- Tools and methods for the development of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs) - The EU Covenant of Mayors Experience and lessons learnt;
- Mainstreaming energy efficiency projects – the «Triple-A» approach;
- Digitizing energy savings – an alternative approach for local and regional authorities: Bahrain city case study.
