DER Director News
Working From Home With Help!

To brighten everyone's week, DER is going to feature staff working from home with their furry friends who assist them! This week meet Krista and her dogs Smokey (dark colored) and Laila (light colored). Both are rescue puppies from local area shelters. Smokey has been with the family for 11 years and Laila 4 years. Both keep Krista company by spending the day lazing around on the couch while she works. They both join Krista with her children on daily walks around the neighborhood for some fresh air.

If you would like to nominate a faculty member and their pets (or yourself!), email hansleyc@msu.edu

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!

During this uncertain time, some of us have gone home to work - which could be anywhere. DER would like to remind you that all proposal deadlines are based on Michigan State University as the applicant. Therefore, the Eastern Time Zone should be used for all communication and proposal deadlines.

DER COVID-19 Research Updates and Funding Opportunities

The DER team has instituted many tools to ensure that we can continue to serve the faculty. We frequently add resources related to COVID-19 funding on this webpage and provide research updates on our Coronavirus page.

DER Proposal Volume

DER would like to thank Dr. Philip Eisenlohr for an idea to improve the visualization of the proposal volume from the current multi-bar chart to a polar plot. If you have ideas to improve the DER newsletter, don’t hesitate to send an email to DER@msu.edu.

Fast Funding for COVID-19 Science

If you are a scientist at an academic institution currently working on a COVID-19 related project and in need of funding, we invite you to apply for a Fast Grant. Fast Grants are $10k to $500k and decisions are made in under 48 hours. If we approve the grant, you'll receive payment as quickly as your university can receive it.

xTech COVID-19 Ventilator Challenge

The Army seeks a low-cost, readily manufacturable emergency ventilator to quickly augment ventilator capacity in the exigent COVID-19 pandemic. The technology solution must provide a rapid response breathing apparatus capable of short-term, rugged field operation. Ideally, the technology would support field hospitals that are still acquiring critical infrastructure such as generators, power distribution and pressurized oxygen.

NSF Update

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is pleased to announce the availability of both NSF-approved formats for the Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending Support sections of NSF proposals that fall under the revised Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG). Read the full update here.

NIH eRA Moving to the Cloud April 17 to April 20

Just a reminder that eRA is planning a major undertaking this month, to migrate its modules and data to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud from 8 a.m. ET on Friday, April 17 to 8 p.m. ET on Monday, April 20. All eRA modules (eRA Commons, ASSIST, IAR, iEdison, etc.) and all informational websites (era.nih.gov, etc.) will be unavailable. Any affected due dates will be covered under NIH’s late application policy due to COVID-19.

Can ESI Status Be Extended Due to Disruptions From COVID-19?

Yes. Be sure to describe the nature of the disruption to your research in your ESI extension request. We suggest you submit the request once you know how much research time was lost, unless your upcoming application deadline is imminent and an ESI extension is urgently needed. In this case you would be able to submit another extension once you know the full extent of the time lost. ESI extension submission instructions may be found here.

2-Factor Authentication for eRA Modules

eRA is moving to two-factor authentication via login.gov, meaning that log-in will require something you know (password) and something you have (a phone or other device). This new log-in method will be available Wednesday, April 8, 2020 for users of eRA Commons, Commons Mobile, IAR and ASSIST.

DER Customer Service Survey

The Division of Engineering Research (DER) strives to provide excellent customer service and information related to research. A short survey has been developed to give College of Engineering faculty and staff an opportunity to provide comments on the entire research funding cycle from proposal preparation. The survey will take less than 10 minutes. Please complete the survey by Friday, April 17, 2020, at 5:00 p.m.
