WEEKEND RECIPES | SWEETEN UP YOUR VALENTINE'S

Chocolate Pancakes with Hot Chocolate Sauce
Pancake Day falls on Tuesday 13 February this year – yup, the day before Valentine's Day. Put 'em together and what have you got? Loved-up chocolate pancakes!
This recipe serves four, but if you're planning on dining a deux, both the batter and the sauce will happily sit in the fridge for up to three date nights.
Ingredients (serves 4)
For the pancakes:
150g self-raising flour 30g cocoa powder 60g caster sugar 2 large eggs 165ml semi-skimmed milk 2 tbsp vegetable oil
For the chocolate sauce:
100g plain chocolate, chopped into chunks 150ml semi-skimmed milk 40g butter, cubed 2 tbsp golden syrup 4 tbsp double cream
To serve: whipped cream, fresh strawberries, dusting of icing sugar
Method
Sift the flour, cocoa, baking powder and sugar together in a large bowl. Whisk the eggs and milk together in jug, then add to the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined, then cover and leave in the fridge to rest for at least 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, put the chocolate chunks, milk and butter in a small saucepan and heat gently, stirring continuously, until the chocolate and butter have melted and combined with the milk. Remove from the heat and add the golden syrup, whisking until shiny. Cover and set to one side.
When you're ready to make the pancakes, heat a large frying pan over a medium heat and brush lightly with oil. Using a ladle or large spoon, carefully drop batter on to the base of the pan to create pancakes approximately 10cm across. Cook for around 45 seconds until bubbles start to appear on the surface and the pancake is lightly browned on the underside, then flip over and cook for a further 45 seconds. Repeat until all the batter is used up, adding a little more oil to the pan if necessary and setting each cooked pancake aside on a plate to keep warm in a low oven, dividing each one with a layer of greaseproof paper.
As you're reaching the end of the pancake batter, gently reheat the chocolate sauce. Serve the pancakes on warm plates drizzled with the chocolate sauce, whipped cream, slices of fresh strawberries and a dusting of sieved icing sugar.

Australia's Romantic Reds
It's time to say g'day to wine from down under! From the sun-baked, red clay rolling hills of the Barossa to the undulating, maritime coastal vineyards of the Mornington Peninsula, this country has so much to offer. Enjoy Valentine's Day with our top 5 Australian reds:
The Dog Strangler Mataro - Teusner Wines
Deep purple, good name for a band. Blueberries, anise, smoked-meats, Asian spice, really lovely aromatics and evocative things happening in the glass. Deliciously fleshy blue fruits, dark cherry, spice and licorice. This has a really attractive dark fruit-weight and the tannins and acid work in tandem seamlessly to give the dark, slurpy fruit the structure | £20.50
The High Trellis Cabernet Sauvignon - D’Arenberg
This is a wine of great presence, loaded with classic Cabernet Sauvignon characters of cassis, plums, cedar, red pepper and violets. | £15.50
Red Art Amplify Shiraz Cuvee 1 - Rojomoma
The luscious aged complexity from the older vintage wine is lifted by the intense primary fruit from the younger ones. The individual parcels knit together, removing vintage variation, and amplifying the Shiraz characteristics to create a unique and true varietal expression. | £165
Raj's Pick Shiraz - Rojomoma
Concentrated basket-pressings have added great richness, intense flavours and dense tannins to the wine. This is delicately balanced with beautiful French oak. | £69
Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Shiraz - Fowles Wine
This superb Shiraz smells invitingly of juicy ripe blackberries and black cherries, with slightly resinous, spicy, incense notes, toasted oak and raspberry jam. In the mouth, it has the taste of black fruit, black pepper and liquorice notes, alongside subtle, suave oak. | £27.50

|
Curated by Daniel McCabe
Tummy Ache is a promising-looking new magazine that employs fashion and art to initiate an honest conversation surrounding mental health and to break down toxic structures it believes exclude potentially talented but less hardy souls who might be struggling to be seen and heard.
It argues that the dangers of building up a ‘perfect’ version of ourselves to present to the world and hiding from the imperfection and uncertainties of life is in turn dissolving our capacity to feel gratitude, creativity and empathy. With an intriguing list of expert contributors, this looks a magazine to watch. | £20

Bristol Old Vic Theatre School presents 'Twelfth Night'

EXHIBITION | SEE THE UNKNOWN

|
|
|
RWA presents John Hoyland's contemporary art: These Mad Hybrids
From this month RWA will present an extremely rare and largely unknown aspect of the late artist John Hoyland’s (1934-2011) career – ceramic sculptures. Showing until 12 May.
The mixed exhibition brings eleven of Hoyland’s ceramics together with sculpture by Caroline Achaintre, Eric Bainbridge, Phyllida Barlow, Olivia Bax, Hew Locke, Anna Reading, Jessi Reaves, Andrew Sabin, John Summers and Chiffon Thomas.
Individually, these artists work with hugely diverse materials, ranging from cement to synthetic fabric, papier maché to glitter. By turn playful, complex and challenging, their work combines human and animal forms, furniture, everyday objects and architecture into new and hard-to-categorise sculptural hybrids.
This exhibition has also been causing quite the stir! The team at RWA have received lots of international and national art critics/galleries contacting them for press images, so this is an exhibition not to be missed!
